OpenAI has introduced GPT-6.1 Terra, a new AI model designed to complete everyday work tasks faster, make fewer mistakes, and cost significantly less than its predecessor.
The company says the model brings improvements in writing, coding, visual understanding, and computer-based tasks. It can help users create documents, understand technical drawings, fill out forms, and edit videos.
GPT-6.1 Terra’s standard API prices are also 50% lower than those of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
Faster Performance and Better Computer Use
OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Terra can perform complicated tasks involving multiple applications, including converting architectural drawings into 3D models and examining videos frame by frame.
In the Agents’ Last Exam benchmark, the model scored 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra at medium reasoning effort while costing approximately one-third as much per task.
It also matched GPT-6 Astra’s performance at roughly one-tenth its price per token.
OpenAI claims GPT-6.1 Terra completes tasks more than three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
The model also showed improvements in visual understanding, nearly matching OpenAI’s more powerful models in the MMMU-Pro benchmark while operating at a lower cost.

Major Improvements in Accuracy
OpenAI says it has significantly reduced the number of factual mistakes made by GPT-6.1 Terra.
In the company’s internal tests involving difficult questions, the model’s error rate fell substantially compared with GPT-5.6 Terra.
| Reasoning Level | GPT-5.6 Terra | GPT-6.1 Terra |
|---|---|---|
| Low | 53.6% | 16.7% |
| Maximum | 22.3% | 4.3% |
At low reasoning effort, the factual error rate dropped by nearly 37 percentage points.
At maximum effort, it fell by 18 percentage points to 4.3%, approaching the accuracy of GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol in the same evaluation.
These results come from OpenAI’s internal testing and do not mean the model will achieve the same accuracy in every situation.
Better Coding Performance
GPT-6.1 Terra also brings significant improvements in software development.
In Terminal-Bench 4.0, a benchmark measuring how well AI agents complete programming tasks, the model solved 50.3% of problems at maximum reasoning effort.
That is more than double the performance of GPT-5.6 Terra.
| Model | Coding Benchmark Score |
|---|---|
| GPT-5.6 Terra | 21.5% |
| GPT-6.1 Terra | 50.3% |
The model also performed strongly in scientific coding tests, outperforming GPT-6.1 Sol in one benchmark while costing less.
However, OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra remain better choices for the most complicated programming tasks.
Improved Safety and Reliability
OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Terra is better at following instructions, recognizing limitations, and explaining when it cannot complete a task.
The company also reports stronger resistance to malicious instructions designed to manipulate AI systems.
The model meets OpenAI’s Critical cybersecurity capability threshold under its Preparedness Framework and includes safety protections developed for GPT-6 Astra.
Pricing and Availability
GPT-6.1 Terra is available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers through ChatGPT Work and Codex.
OpenAI says subscribers can complete more tasks within their existing usage allowances compared with GPT-5.6 Terra, GPT-6.1 Sol, and GPT-6 Astra.
Developers can access the model through the OpenAI API using the name gpt-6.1-terra.
The API pricing is as follows:
| Usage Type | Price per 1 Million Tokens |
|---|---|
| Input | $1.00 |
| Cached Input | $0.05 |
| Output | $5.00 |
OpenAI says the lower pricing will make the model more practical for businesses that need to automate large numbers of repetitive tasks, such as reading invoices, entering information into accounting software, and processing documents.
