SK hynix is set to outline additional shareholder return measures on Oct. 28, as investors await a decision on how the company will use gains from its investment in Japan’s Kioxia. The company has said no plans have been finalized amid speculation that it could pay a special dividend of 16 trillion won, or approximately $12.1 billion, but it plans to disclose further details alongside its third-quarter earnings.
In a regulatory filing on Oct. 26, SK hynix said it was reviewing various measures to enhance shareholder value but had not made a final decision. The disclosure followed media reports that the company was considering distributing 16 trillion won in a special dividend, equivalent to 80% of an estimated 20 trillion won in gains related to its Kioxia investment. SK hynix said it would announce additional shareholder return measures following board approval when it releases its third-quarter results on Oct. 28, 2026.
Kioxia, the potential source of the funds, was established through the spin-off of Toshiba’s memory business. In 2018, SK hynix invested approximately 3.3 trillion won through a consortium led by U.S. private equity firm Bain Capital. As Kioxia’s valuation has risen and SK hynix has begun recovering its investment, the company’s pre-tax gains have been estimated at around 20 trillion won. That would be nearly 10 times SK hynix’s total dividend payout of 2.1 trillion won last year.
SK hynix has already stepped up its shareholder return efforts this year. The company completed its 40 trillion won share repurchase program on Oct. 21, about a month ahead of schedule. Announced in August, the program involved buying back and canceling all the shares acquired. SK hynix also raised its shareholder return target from up to 50% of cumulative free cash flow (FCF) to more than 50%, reinforcing its commitment to returning cash to shareholders.
A special dividend of the reported scale could become a significant catalyst for the stock. A 16 trillion won payout would translate into an estimated dividend of around 23,000 won per share, roughly 15 times the regular annual dividend of 1,500 won. Analysts have suggested that stronger shareholder returns could support a share price recovery, particularly if the company announces a more generous policy while its valuation remains under pressure.
The company is also weighing how best to deploy the cash generated from its investments and operations. During its second-quarter earnings announcement, SK hynix said it was considering several options for using additional funds, including proceeds related to its Kioxia investment, and would share its plans before the end of the year. The decision to suspend plans for a U.S. listing of its subsidiary Solidigm has also shifted attention toward the company’s ability to fund shareholder returns internally.
SK hynix’s third-quarter earnings are expected to be another major focus on Oct. 28. Market consensus puts operating profit at approximately 7.7 trillion won, more than 570% higher than a year earlier. If the company reports record earnings and announces a more detailed shareholder return plan, investor attention is likely to intensify. However, the scale and structure of any additional payout will depend on the company’s formal announcement.
