SA Rugby hosted a succesfull Greatest Rivalry series Test between the Springboks and New Zealand at FNB Stadium in September.
The Springboks and All Blacks showed what FNB Stadium can deliver on a major sporting occasion, but the venue faces another test when Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs meet in a sold-out Soweto Derby on Saturday.
With around 90,000 supporters expected at the Calabash, Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has turned his attention to whether the stadium can provide football fans with the same safe and orderly experience enjoyed during September’s rugby international.
McKenzie conducted an oversight walkabout at the venue on Monday, alongside Stadium Management South Africa (SMSA), as preparations intensified for one of South African football’s biggest fixtures.
The visit follows repeated concerns over crowd management at previous derbies, including congestion outside the stadium, long queues, ticketing problems, overcrowding and supporters finding other people occupying their allocated seats.
For McKenzie, the contrast with rugby has become difficult to ignore.
The sold-out Springboks-All Blacks Test at FNB Stadium in September attracted 85,976 spectators, with stadium management now looking to replicate the arrangements for Saturday’s football match.
The derby is expected to draw around 90,000 fans, placing considerable pressure on organisers to ensure that the stadium’s access systems, security arrangements and crowd-control measures function as intended.
The minister has previously warned SMSA that failures to protect supporters would have serious consequences, saying those responsible could face arrest if they failed to keep people safe.
His intervention comes after he described previous derby experiences as dangerous, highlighting reports of supporters being threatened when attempting to occupy their allocated seats and concerns about people entering the venue without valid tickets.
The challenge is therefore not simply filling the stadium. It is ensuring that every ticket holder can enter safely, reach the correct seat and leave the venue without being exposed to unnecessary risks.
SMSA chief executive Bertie Grobbelaar has expressed confidence that the rugby event provides a blueprint for Saturday.
He said organisers intend to use the same ticketing system, personnel and similar technology deployed during the Springboks-All Blacks clash.
Supporters have been encouraged to arrive early and consider public transport or park-and-ride facilities to ease congestion around the Nasrec precinct.
Chiefs have also warned fans that tickets for the match are completely sold out and that no tickets will be available at the stadium. Supporters without valid tickets have been urged not to travel to the venue.
The stakes are high for both clubs, but the experience outside the pitch could prove just as important as the action between the lines.
The Soweto Derby remains one of the country’s biggest sporting occasions, drawing supporters from across South Africa and generating enormous public interest. That makes the responsibility to protect those attending particularly significant.
FNB Stadium has demonstrated that it can host a major rugby crowd under controlled conditions. The question now is whether those arrangements can be transferred successfully to a football match with its own ticketing challenges, supporter dynamics and security demands.
