When Brady Tkachuk was dealt to the Florida Panthers over the summer, everyone knew his first trip back to Canadian Tire Centre was going to be a spectacle. What nobody could have predicted was just how organized and visceral the response from Senators fans would be, or how a well-intentioned charitable gesture would end up falling flat before it even got off the ground.
A Hostile Homecoming
The former Senators captain stepped onto the ice in Ottawa last Wednesday to a reception that can only be described as ruthless. Before the national anthems had even been performed, a loud "Brady sucks!" chant erupted through the arena. When the Senators played a video tribute for their former leader, the crowd responded with a chorus of boos that drowned out any attempt at nostalgia.
Tkachuk did manage to open the scoring, which briefly silenced the hostile building, but it did little to change the overall tone of the evening. Ottawa went on to dominate the rest of the contest, winning 5-1 in convincing fashion. Throughout the game, fans hurled creative chants at their former captain and, more notably, hurled his jerseys onto the ice surface.
The final tally? According to Ian Mendes, the Senators' vice president of communications, exactly 37 Tkachuk jerseys were collected from the ice that night. That is a staggering number and a clear message from a fanbase that felt betrayed by the departure of the player who once wore the "C" for their team.
The Donation That Wasn't
Ahead of his return, Tkachuk had tried to get out in front of the jersey tossing. On his Wingmen podcast, which he co-hosts with brother and Panthers teammate Matthew Tkachuk, Brady announced that every No. 7 jersey thrown onto the ice would be donated to BGC Ottawa (formerly the Boys and Girls Club), a charity he had been closely involved with during his time in the nation's capital. He even added a cheeky "I don't recommend doing it" to try and discourage fans from following through.
That plan, however, has hit a wall. Mendes revealed in his weekly column that he reached out to the Panthers organization over the weekend to share the total jersey count, since Tkachuk had expressed interest in making a donation tied to the tossed sweaters. The problem is that many of the 37 jerseys were in damaged or unusable condition by the time they were retrieved, meaning they won't actually be passed along to BGC Ottawa.
It is an unfortunate outcome for a gesture that seemed genuinely well-meaning. Whether the jerseys were ripped, stained, or otherwise destroyed before being launched onto the ice, the end result is that the charitable angle Tkachuk was hoping for simply isn't going to materialize in the way he envisioned.
Tkachuk, now 27, has been productive in his new home, posting seven goals and five assists through 12 games with the Panthers this season. But his relationship with Ottawa fans appears to be thoroughly fractured, and the image of 37 jerseys scattered across the ice will likely define this chapter of his career for a long time to come. Whether there is any path toward reconciliation with the Senators faithful remains to be seen, but based on what happened last Wednesday, it is safe to say that bridge has a long way to go before it is rebuilt.
