For the last 50 years, the New York Road Runner’s TCS NYC Marathon has brought thousands of runners together to run through the 5 boroughs of New York City.
As an official charity partner, Reach Within is celebrating its own milestone with its biggest marathon team yet. This year, 21 runners from Grenada, Puerto Rico, the United States, and the United Kingdom have bravely committed to collectively fundraising over $90,000. Funds raised support Reach Within’s work with Grenadian children and youth who are currently in or have aged out of Child Protective Services.
Every dollar supports trauma-healing programmes that teach important skills for jobs, life, leadership, and resiliency. Reach Within also provides individual mentorship, counselling services, a food pantry, clothing, and other essential items.
Philomena Robertson, who recently became the first Grenadian to complete the World Marathon Majors, joined Team Reach Within for a 9th year. Reflecting on her experience, Robertson shared, “This is my 9th NYC marathon running in support of Reach Within, and I have pledged to continue supporting them as long as my legs will carry me. Over the years, I’ve raised thousands of dollars to support the organisation as it continues to make a difference in the lives of Grenadian children who have experienced abuse or other trauma.”
Roberts continued, “It is truly an honour to be able to contribute to Reach Within’s fundraising efforts. I run the races and put in the training miles, but the financial support generated is all because of generous donors who are also convinced about the importance of the work being done. I am thankful for all who have donated so far, both private individuals and corporate citizens. Runners will kick off the NYC marathon weekend with a comforting Caribbean luncheon hosted by Negril Village, a well-known and loved Jamaican restaurant in NYC. Marva Layne, Founder and Owner of Negril Village, shared, “We are excited to launch our Foreign Friends initiative by sponsoring the pre-marathon luncheon for Reach Within’s NYC Marathon team. We at Negril Village believe that it takes a village to strengthen our community and support our culture, and it is our great pleasure to do our part in supporting Grenada. Thank you, Reach Within, for the opportunity to create a diaspora connection within the Caribbean American Experience.”
