Bangladesh is projected to overtake India in per capita gross domestic product (GDP) in 2026, according to the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) latest World Economic Outlook.
The October report estimates Bangladesh’s per capita GDP at $2,886, compared with $2,749 for India, although the neighbouring country retains a substantial lead in overall economic size and purchasing power.
The projected milestone comes amid mounting economic pressures in Bangladesh, including high inflation and a slowdown in growth.
While the country has made considerable economic progress over the past two decades, analysts caution that a higher per capita GDP figure alone does not necessarily translate into better living standards or greater household purchasing power.
Bangladesh previously surpassed India in per capita GDP in 2020, before India regained the lead in subsequent years.
The difference in the two countries’ overall economic capacity remains substantial.
India’s total GDP is projected to reach $4.15 trillion in 2026, roughly eight times Bangladesh’s estimated $506.4 billion, according to the IMF projections.
Per capita GDP is calculated by dividing a country’s total economic output by its population.
It provides an average measure of economic output per person but does not represent the income received by each individual or directly indicate how wealth is distributed across society.
Nor should it be confused with national income, which reflects income earned by residents from domestic and overseas sources.
Export earnings and remittances are important to Bangladesh’s economy, but they do not translate directly into an equivalent increase in per capita GDP.
Over the past two decades, Bangladesh has achieved notable economic progress, driven largely by its ready-made garment (RMG) industry, strong remittance inflows and increased participation by women in the labour force.
The garment sector has played a major role in generating export earnings and employment, while remittances have supported household consumption and foreign exchange inflows.
Greater female participation in economic activity has also contributed to the country’s development.
However, the momentum has come under pressure from persistent inflation and slower economic growth.
Rising prices have eroded household purchasing power, making it harder for many people to translate the country’s economic gains into improvements in their daily lives.
The IMF’s projection therefore highlights a distinction between average economic output per person and the broader strength of an economy.
Although Bangladesh is expected to edge ahead of India in per capita GDP in 2026, the much larger size of India’s economy and differences in purchasing power mean that the figures alone cannot establish which country offers better living standards for its population.
