Malaysia and Singapore agree to strengthen energy cooperation, including facilitating a 300MW floating solar project at Linggiu Dam, says DPM Fadillah Yusof.
SINGAPORE: Malaysia is prepared to assist Singapore in facilitating the implementation of a 300-megawatt (MW) renewable energy supply project involving floating solar photovoltaic systems at the Linggiu Dam in Johor, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
He said the matter was discussed during a bilateral meeting with Singapore’s Minister for Energy and Trade and Industry (Energy and Industry) Dr Tan See Leng on the sidelines of Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2026 on Monday.
Fadillah, who is also Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said the hour-long meeting also discussed efforts to strengthen cooperation between Malaysia and Singapore in the area of energy supply.
“There are several projects that they want to develop, and we have more or less agreed to assist and facilitate them, including an additional 300MW through a floating solar photovoltaic system at Linggiu Dam.”
Also present at the bilateral meeting was Malaysian High Commissioner to Singapore Datin Paduka Anizan Siti Hajjar Adnin.
Last August, Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) granted conditional approval to Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd for a 300MW renewable energy import project from Peninsular Malaysia to Singapore.
Meanwhile, Fadillah said Malaysia and Singapore had also agreed to proceed with an electricity subsea interconnector project between the two countries following the Joint Development Agreement signed in October 2025 between Singapore Energy Interconnections, SP PowerAssets and Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB).
“The second interconnector study has been completed, so we will look at how we can implement it,” he said.
Earlier, in his keynote address themed “Interconnecting Energy Systems to Power the Future”, Fadillah stressed that energy security was a strategic necessity in addressing geopolitical uncertainties, supply chain disruptions and rising electricity demand driven by economic growth, data centres and artificial intelligence (AI).
He highlighted the role of technology and financing as drivers of energy system transformation, noting that AI had the potential to enhance demand forecasting capabilities, optimise grid operations and facilitate the integration of renewable energy.
Fadillah also held meetings with international energy industry leaders, including the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Siemens Energy, ACWA Power, Electricité de France (EDF), Gentari and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
Among the matters discussed were strengthening clean energy industry supply chains, including turbine manufacturing and human capital development, as well as the role of governments in facilitating investment and promoting the adoption of the latest technologies in the clean energy sector.
The Deputy Prime Minister then witnessed the exchange of memoranda of understanding (MoUs) between the Energy Commission of Malaysia and EMA, as well as an MoU involving Ditrolic Energy, International Finance Corporation (IFC), DBS and Maybank to strengthen cooperation in the energy sector.
He also witnessed the presentation of conditional approval marking progress on the Vietnam-Malaysia-Singapore electricity interconnection project, involving cooperation between Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd and PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC), Petronas and TNB.
