Edgar Berlanga was arrested on Oct. 26 by the Lakeland Police Department in Polk County, Florida, on misdemeanor battery and felony aggravated battery charges arising from an incident that allegedly occurred on Oct. 18.
Berlanga appeared in court on Tuesday at Bartow Courthouse, where a judge set his bail at a combined $16,000, according to court records obtained by Uncrowned. The Nuyorican boxer's arraignment hearing is scheduled for 8:45 a.m. on Nov. 17, when he will hear the charges and formally enter a plea.
Berlanga is being charged with first-degree misdemeanor battery — touch or strike under Florida Statute Section 784.03 — and second-degree felony aggravated battery under Florida Statute Section 784.045(1A1).
The misdemeanor battery charge carries a maximum sentence of one year imprisonment. At the same time, the felony is a far more serious charge and could see Berlanga imprisoned for up to 15 years if convicted.
Berlanga (24-2, 19 KOs) last stepped into the boxing ring in July at Madison Square Garden's Infosys Theater in New York. He recovered from an early knockdown to stop Steven Butler in Round 7 of their super middleweight slugfest atop Zuffa Boxing 9.
In 2024, he challenged boxing star Saul “Canleo” Alvarez for the WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles, losing a unanimous decision.
