CHERY Auto Malaysia has confirmed that 8,878 Omoda 5 vehicles are covered by its latest recall campaign, providing the first indication of the scale of the exercise following the recent rear axle incident and JPJ’s temporary suspension of the model’s Vehicle Type Approval.
The recall covers both the Omoda 5 C and H variants. Chery Auto Malaysia says it has already identified the affected vehicles and will contact the respective owners directly to arrange the next steps.
All vehicles included in the campaign are eligible for a complimentary inspection and replacement at any authorised Chery service centre nationwide.
The company says the first shipment of replacement components has already been dispatched, with parts due to arrive at service centres in stages.
Owners do not necessarily have to wait to be contacted. Chery Auto Malaysia says they can check whether their vehicle is included in the campaign by entering its Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN, through the Chery Malaysia website.
The latest update follows Chery Auto Malaysia’s earlier confirmation that it had begun a recall campaign for affected Omoda 5 C and H models after an incident in Johor Bahru on October 6, where the rear suspension and axle assembly of an Omoda 5 separated from the vehicle.
JPJ subsequently suspended the relevant VTA and new registrations for the model while a technical investigation was carried out.
The suspension affects new registrations and does not amount to a blanket stop-use order for Omoda 5 vehicles already registered on Malaysian roads.
This is also not the first recall involving the rear axle of the Omoda 5. In 2024, Chery Malaysia recalled 600 vehicles following a separate case in which the rear axle of an Omoda 5 failed while the vehicle was being driven.
At the time, the issue was traced to an incorrectly calibrated welding machine at the component supplier after a welding tip was replaced.
Chery later identified 60 Malaysian vehicles produced on August 15 2023 as having potentially affected components, before widening inspections to cover the precautionary batch.
There is currently no confirmation that the latest incident shares the same root cause as the 2024 case, nor has Chery Auto Malaysia said whether the vehicle involved this month formed part of the earlier recall.
The company’s latest statement instead says measures taken for the current campaign are based on investigation findings and aligned with JPJ.
The affected Omoda 5 is the pre-facelift model, which has since been replaced in Malaysia by the Chery O5 launched in September 2025.
The newer O5 also uses a different multi-link rear suspension arrangement, replacing the torsion-beam setup found on the earlier Omoda 5.
