Sundarapandiyam farmers demand desilting of irrigation tank and renovation of supply channel
Farmers from Sundarapandiyam in Watrap Block have demanded to repair the supply channel of Periyakulam tank to ensure water Pilavakkal dam reached the tank without any hassle.
In a petition submitted to Virudhunagar Collector, Sharanya Ari, the farmers also demanded that the Periyakulam tank be desilted and the wild growth be cleared.
Periyakulam tank caters to the irrigation of over 400 acres of farmland and scores of farmers and hundreds of farm hands are dependent on this tank for their livelihood.
“This tank has not been desilted for the last 25 years and its supply channel has not been renovated,” said one of them, Subburaj.
The renovation work would help the tank to store water to its maximum water holding capacity, the petition said.
They also said that some individuals and NGOs have come forward to contribute for renovation of the tank and its supply channel and the farmers were ready to cooperate with them.
The district administration should take efforts to give permission for the work through District Rural Development Agency, the farmers said.
