China has awarded a $413 million contract to build a self-propelled floating research platform designed to support long-term deep-sea scientific research in challenging ocean conditions. The vessel, described as the world’s first floating artificial island dedicated to this type of research, will combine onboard laboratories with a mobile structure intended to remain at sea for extended periods.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University will operate the platform, while Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), will handle its design and construction. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2028, with delivery planned for June 2030.
Unlike a conventional research ship, the proposed platform will use a twin-hull catamaran configuration with a semi-submersible main structure. It is designed to move between research areas while providing accommodation and laboratory space for scientists studying marine ecosystems, ocean engineering and severe weather conditions.
Mobile platform designed for rough seas
The planned research vessel will measure approximately 453 feet long and 279 feet wide, with a main deck height of 148 feet. Its displacement is expected to reach 74,000 tons, and it will have a maximum speed of 11 knots, Chinese media reported.
The catamaran design is intended to provide stability and seakeeping capabilities during extended operations offshore. According to the project specifications, the platform is designed to operate in Sea State 7, which corresponds to significant wave heights of approximately 20 to 30 feet, and withstand a Category 17 typhoon, with maximum sustained winds exceeding 165 mph.
The vessel’s ability to move under its own power is a key part of the concept. Rather than remaining permanently anchored at a single location, it is intended to reposition as research requirements change, combining the mobility of a ship with the working space and long-duration accommodation of a floating facility.
Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding says the project will draw on its experience constructing large and technically complex offshore structures, including a sixth-generation semi-submersible drilling platform designed for operations in water depths of up to 9,843 feet.
Six laboratories for marine science and engineering
The floating platform will include six shipborne laboratories focused on marine heavy equipment and systems technology, alongside facilities for studying marine disasters, meteorology and long-term changes in ocean ecosystems.
Its research mission is expected to cover both the engineering challenges of working in deep water and the environmental processes affecting the oceans. Long-duration observations can help researchers study changes that are difficult to capture during short research cruises, while onboard engineering facilities could support testing of marine equipment and systems.
The vessel is designed to accommodate 238 people, including crew members and researchers. That capacity is intended to support extended missions without requiring the platform to return to port frequently for personnel changes or logistical support.
The combination of laboratories, accommodation and a large working platform could also enable researchers to conduct several types of studies from a single location. Its planned delivery in June 2030 leaves several years for detailed design and construction before the platform can begin operations.
