Two assets long marketed as safe havens have both landed at the bottom of 2026 performance rankings, reports say.
Bitcoin and gold have both been named the worst-performing major assets of 2026, according to reports from U.Today and BeInCrypto. Both outlets describe the simultaneous underperformance as a historic first for the two assets.
Gold and bitcoin have traditionally occupied similar roles in investor portfolios. Both are frequently marketed as stores of value that hold up when stocks, bonds, or currencies come under pressure. Gold has carried that reputation for centuries. Bitcoin picked up the label more recently, often described as digital gold by its supporters.
The reports do not specify the exact margin by which either asset trailed other markets in 2026. What they do establish is the unusual nature of the overlap. Historically, when one of these assets has struggled, the other has often served as an alternative hedge. Investors have leaned on that inverse or at least uncorrelated relationship for years.
This year appears to break that pattern. If both assets are lagging other major asset classes at the same time, it suggests the usual diversification logic behind holding either one may be under strain. That matters for portfolio construction, where gold and bitcoin are frequently used as counterweights to equities and fiat currency exposure.
The framing used by both outlets emphasizes the word 'safe haven' specifically. That label has underpinned much of the institutional and retail interest in both assets over the past decade. Pension funds, sovereign wealth vehicles, and individual investors have all cited haven status as a reason to hold gold or bitcoin, or both, as insurance against broader market stress.
Neither report attributes the underperformance to a single cause. Multiple factors typically shape returns across asset classes in a given year, including interest rate policy, currency strength, risk appetite, and shifting capital flows into equities or other competing assets. Without further detail from the sources, it is not possible to isolate which of these forces, if any, played the dominant role in 2026.
What is clear from the reporting is that the pairing itself, bitcoin and gold trailing nearly everything else at once, is being treated as notable. Market commentators and analysts are likely to scrutinize this development further as the year closes, given how central the safe-haven narrative has been to both assets' investment cases.
Market Impact
If confirmed over the remainder of the year, this dual underperformance could prompt renewed debate over how investors classify both assets within diversified portfolios. Treating bitcoin and gold as reliable hedges against equity or currency weakness has been a core assumption for many allocation strategies. A simultaneous decline in relative performance may push some investors to reassess that assumption, particularly if the trend persists into 2027.
For bitcoin specifically, the result could reignite discussion about whether it behaves more like a risk asset correlated with broader market sentiment than like a true store of value. For gold, a weak year alongside bitcoin would be unusual given its long track record as a defensive holding during uncertainty. Analysts will likely watch upcoming data on interest rates, currency markets, and equity performance to better understand what drove the shared weakness.
The reported pairing of bitcoin and gold as the worst-performing assets of 2026 marks an unusual moment for two instruments long sold as portfolio insurance. Further data and analysis will be needed to explain the shared decline and whether it signals a lasting shift in how markets price either asset.
