Kimi Antonelli leads the 2026 Formula 1 drivers’ championship by 123 points over George Russell. There are 125 points left on the table. That is not a title fight so much as an arithmetic exercise, and the Mexico City Grand Prix, which runs October 30 to November 1, is where it can finish.
The stat of the day: after 18 of 23 rounds, Antonelli has 365 points to Russell’s 242 and Hamilton’s 241. His lead is 98.4% of the maximum 125 points still available.
What the number actually says
Raw gaps flatter or deceive depending on how many races remain, so the useful version is lead divided by points available. Five rounds are left, and with no sprint weekends on that list, 125 points is the ceiling. Antonelli’s 123-point cushion means a rival would need to outscore him by almost the entire remaining haul. Spread across the season, he has averaged roughly 20.3 points a round against Russell’s 13.4, and his Austin win was his ninth of the year. Half of the 18 rounds so far have ended with him on the top step.
The Mexico scenarios
Run the points scale (25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1) against the official standings and the clinching conditions are narrow. If neither Russell nor Hamilton wins in Mexico, Antonelli is champion no matter where he finishes: even a retirement leaves him 105 clear of Russell with 100 left. If Russell wins, Antonelli needs eighth or better. If Hamilton wins, he needs ninth or better. Anything lower and the maths stays technically alive, though barely.
Note who can actually stop it. The two realistic spoilers are his own teammate and a Ferrari driver, which says plenty about how the season has gone. Russell’s COTA race did not help: he was handed a five-second penalty and took the flag eighth. Hamilton finished fourth, which is why the title was not decided in Austin. We broke down how front-row starts have dominated COTA before the race, and Antonelli, who started from pole, did what that history predicted.
Strategy is part of the margin
The Austin result carried a strategic fingerprint. Antonelli won by 13.078 seconds over Charles Leclerc on a one-stop plan, mediums to hards, while Leclerc, Max Verstappen, Hamilton and Lando Norris all stopped twice. That is the competitive meaning of a big points lead: it lets Mercedes take the calculated call and the rivals chase. Leclerc’s second place was the best Ferrari could extract, and the constructors’ table shows the gap behind it: Mercedes 607 points, Ferrari 474, a 133-point margin with 215 available. Ferrari’s recent hire of a Mercedes engine specialist reads differently when you see that scoreboard.
Why a lead this size is unusual
Compare it with title fights that went to the wire. In 2007, Kimi Räikkönen took the championship by a single point at the final round. Antonelli would clinch with four rounds to spare if Mexico goes his way, and he would become the youngest champion in F1 history, beating Sebastian Vettel’s 2010 mark of 23 years and 134 days. Mercedes’ dominance also sharpens an old paddock story: the Hamilton move that Red Bull kept paying for looks small next to a team now holding the top two drivers’ places in the standings.
What to watch next
Watch Mexico qualifying first. Pole there turns the clinching maths into a straightforward drive; a Mercedes grid slot behind Hamilton or Russell makes the opening lap the whole story. Then watch whether Russell and Antonelli are allowed to race freely when the title is no longer in doubt for anyone else.
Method: all points, gaps and results come from the official Formula 1 championship standings and race classification after the 2026 United States Grand Prix (Round 18). The clinch scenarios are our own calculation using the standard 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 scoring scale and 125 remaining points; the 98.4% figure is 123 divided by 125, and per-round averages are points divided by 18 rounds.
