The “RE-MENT” project by the Swedish company “Cemvision” has been selected to receive funding of up to 27.5 million euros from the European Union’s Innovation Fund for the construction of a commercial-scale low-emission cement plant in Ventspils, the Latvian Investment and Development Agency (LIAA) said in a release on Tuesday.
The project is one of two projects planned in Latvia to have been selected for funding in this call for proposals.
As part of the “RE-MENT” project, “Cemvision” plans to build a plant in Ventspils capable of producing up to 500,000 tonnes of cement per year with low production emissions. The aim of the project is to produce supersulphate cement (SSC), which can reduce CO₂ emissions by more than 90 per cent compared with traditional cement production. It is estimated that, over its first ten years of operation, the project will help prevent more than 3.1 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions.
“Cemvision” will begin preparing a grant agreement with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA). The agreement is expected to be signed between November 2026 and March 2027.
