Samantha Ruth Prabhu is setting the fashion bar high with her pregnancy style. The actor, who is hosting MasterChef Tamil with celebrity contestants, is dishing (pun intended) one great look after another. For a recent episode on the show, Ruth Prabhu wore a handwoven sari and jacket from designer Anavila’s namesake label that looked both comfortable and chic, while championing handloom and slow fashion.

Released as a part of the designer’s summer collection called Malli Kali that draws inspiration from jasmine flowers found in the city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu, the actor’s sari and jacket feature Misra’s interpretation of flowers and the birds and insects they attract. The ivory sari is made with handspun, handwoven cotton silk textile in ivory with a gold-tone pallu. The border features a silver zari border that is further enhanced with floral and dragonfly motifs as appliqué. She layered the look with an ecru jacket crafted with linen, inundated with appliqué matching with the sari’s border. The jacket’s buttons, too, are covered in linen fabric and feature embroidered details, which adds to the look’s earthiness. The sari and jacket set embody the prairiecore trend that originated in the late 1970s and early ’80s and witnessed a full-fledged resurgence right before the pandemic.
Stylist Pooja Karanam kept the accessories to a minimum for this textile-forward look. She styled Ruth Prabhu with a pair of pearl earrings with crystal droppings from Beyond Larissa and a ring from Ahmedabad-based jewellery label Moi. Her makeup was nude and matte and focused on eyes, while her hair was tied into a messy bun.
From the Vogue desk:
“It is easy to assume that textile-forward creations are boring, but this look from Anavila—especially the addition of a jacket elevates the sari. Cotton saris like this can also be styled with shirts to give it a casual slant. Stacking with silver jewellery adds to its bohemian appeal,” says Ashwini Arun Kumar, Vogue India fashion features editor.
