Lahore traffic police have announced stricter measures to curb road accidents, including the suspension of driving licenses and vehicle route permits following fatal crashes. Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore Abdul Rahim Sherazi said heavy and commercial vehicles account for only 4% of total traffic but are involved in 44% of road accidents.
According to the CTO, authorities have suspended the licenses of 117 drivers involved in accidents this year and requested the suspension of route permits for 97 public service vehicles. Drivers involved in fatal or serious non-fatal accidents will face license suspension, subject to court orders, while those responsible for fatal crashes may also face legal action.
Licenses for reckless driving may remain suspended for six months to three years. Lahore traffic police will also take action against drivers operating vehicles that contribute to smog and prosecute those caught driving with suspended licenses.
