The World Health Organization (WHO) has clarified that Nigeria has not been declared Ebola-free, warning that the absence of confirmed cases following the evacuation of the index patient to Switzerland does not mean the outbreak has officially ended.
WHO Nigeria issued the clarification after reports interpreted a statement by the organisation’s Regional Director for Africa as confirmation that the country was free of the disease.
The organisation said health authorities were still monitoring 52 contacts who might have been exposed to the confirmed case, urging media organisations to correct headlines suggesting that Nigeria had been declared Ebola-free.
The clarification reads in part: “WHO has not declared Nigeria Ebola‑free. Nigeria currently has no confirmed case of Ebola following the medical evacuation of the index patient to Switzerland. Health officials are closely monitoring 52 contacts who may have been exposed.”
The organisation explained that specific conditions must be met before an Ebola outbreak can officially be declared over, in line with the International Health Regulations.

“Under the International Health Regulations, a country can only be declared Ebola‑free after a 42‑day countdown following the last confirmed case testing negative twice for the virus or, in this situation, after the evacuation of the confirmed case. This period is then followed by heightened surveillance,” the statement added.
WHO also called for the correction of reports that misrepresented its earlier communication.

“WHO requests that these headlines be retracted and corrected. It is an inaccurate interpretation of the X post made by the WHO Regional Director for Africa,” the clarification stated.
The development follows Nigeria’s confirmation of an imported case of Bundibugyo virus disease, a type of Ebola, in a 42-year-old woman who travelled from Uganda to the country.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) confirmed the infection on October 20, 2026, after laboratory tests returned positive results.
The patient was subsequently isolated and treated by Nigerian health workers before being medically evacuated to Switzerland alongside her husband, who is also a Swiss citizen.
Following the evacuation, Nigeria has continued monitoring 52 contacts linked to the case as part of efforts to detect possible infections and prevent further transmission.
Health authorities have urged identified contacts to cooperate with public health officials and comply with monitoring requirements.
The WHO stressed that heightened surveillance would remain essential throughout the monitoring period to identify any potential resurgence of the disease.
