If you grew up rooting for the Steelers in the 1990s, you likely had a Kordell Stewart jersey in your closet.
The former Pittsburgh star earned the nickname "Slash" after jumping from Colorado to the NFL and making an impact at multiple positions. Long before mobile quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen were dodging defenders, Stewart was lining up at wide receiver.
"I did everything under the sun, from punting, catching, throwing, running," Stewart said during an interview with CBS analysts Kyle Long and Russell Wilson. "Then, all of a sudden, I got my opportunity to start in 1997. And then I showed I was capable of being a full-time quarterback in the National Football League."
Stewart went 11-5 in his first year as Pittsburgh's starter with 32 total touchdowns. He set career highs with 3,109 passing yards and 537 rushing yards in 2001, finishing fourth in MVP voting.
But he also faced significant challenges on and off the field.
Stewart had to deal with unsubstantiated rumors alleging that he was arrested for engaging in lewd acts with a man at a local park. Despite the lack of evidence surrounding the allegations and Stewart's firm denial, the rumors lingered. He only lasted one more season in Pittsburgh after his stellar 2001 campaign, ending his career with short stints in Chicago (2003) and Baltimore (2004-05).
