Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green shared his take on why Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic will never win an NBA MVP award.
Despite being a perennial MVP contender since he entered his second season in the NBA, Doncic has never been able to break through and be a realistic contender for the award over the course of the season.
He rarely loses out due to production, as Doncic has been one of the most productive players in the NBA over this decade, but narrative factors always drag him down. Despite being an MVP contender in 2026-27, Green believes the voters will never reward Doncic.
Draymond Green’s assessment on why Luka Doncic will never be NBA MVP
On ‘The Draymond Green Show,’ the Warriors forward cited voter fatigue as the No. 1 reason Doncic will never be rewarded as an MVP winner.
“I still don’t think there’s any chance he is going to win MVP. The moment he has a few bad games, or he gets an injury that makes him miss games, people will switch back up. ‘Oh, same Luka.’ People get bored with greatness.”
“Luka has been doing great things for a very long time, and I think they are gonna stay bored with it. The voters get fatigued seeing you be great over and over again.”
“I wholeheartedly believe he will never win an MVP because he is in Year 9, and the people who vote, have already moved on.”
Doncic is averaging 34.3 points, 8.0 assists, and 7.3 rebounds through three games in the 2026-27 NBA season, scoring the first 50-point game of the season with 52 points, eight rebounds, and 10 assists against the Utah Jazz.
Despite having a game like that and leading the Lakers to an undefeated 3-0 record, the doubts around Doncic’s MVP case continue to exist. If he can’t even be the frontrunner after the week he has had, it is unlikely he will sustain voter support for the next 79 games of the season.
He has had multiple MVP-caliber seasons over his career, specifically his performances in the 2021-22 season and the 2023-24 season, both ending with deep playoff runs for an outmatched Mavericks squad.
Team record has often been held against him as the main reason for his MVP failures. If he can lead the Lakers to 55+ wins, he might just grab his first career MVP trophy.
