The Kansas City Chiefs spent five weeks rebuilding their reputation as one of the NFL's most dangerous teams, but Sunday's 20-3 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks has raised uncomfortable questions about how much progress they have actually made.
After recovering from a disappointing 6-11 campaign in 2025, Kansas City entered the matchup unbeaten and appeared to have rediscovered the winning formula that previously delivered three Super Bowl championships.
Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce make one lucky woman the envy of every Chiefs fan with unexpected gesture
However, Seattle's defense exposed significant weaknesses in the Chiefs' offense, restricting Patrick Mahomes to 165 passing yards and preventing Kansas City from reaching the red zone.
The performance was particularly alarming because the Chiefs failed to establish their running game or generate consistent opportunities through the air, leaving Mahomes struggling to find answers.
Former Cincinnati Bengals receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh believes the result exposed problems that could ultimately prevent Kansas City from competing for another championship.
Speaking on Monday's episode of Speakeasy, Houshmandzadeh argued that Kansas City's perfect start had created unrealistic expectations about the team's championship credentials.
"The Seahawks are really good. The Chiefs, to me, ARE NOT Super Bowl contenders," Houshmandzadeh said.
"Being 5-0, it looked like, 'Oh the Chiefs are back.' The Seahawks literally shut them down. To get to the Super Bowl and win a Super Bowl, they are going to have to go through teams just like that."
Houshmandzadeh also questioned whether Kansas City has enough explosive offensive weapons to challenge defenses capable of limiting its running game.
He suggested that a reunion with former Chiefs receiver Tyreek Hill could provide Mahomes with the speed and versatility needed to counter Seattle's defensive approach.
"But, for me, it's very rare to see a quarterback like Patrick Mahomes not getting the red zone one time?" he added.
Questions over Mahomes after Seattle disaster
Mahomes completed 19 of 33 passes without a touchdown and threw an interception, recording his second game of the season without a passing score.
His difficulties prompted an even stronger reaction from Skip Bayless, who criticized the quarterback's decision-making and accuracy during Monday's edition of Gridiron.
"That was the worst game he's ever played in his life," Bayless said. "I dare you to go find me a worse game than he played last night."
Bayless suggested Mahomes looked unusually uncertain against Seattle, struggling to find receivers and deliver accurate throws.
"Patrick Mahomes, just from the start, he looked a little confused, a lot of indecisive very tentative, and then he just completely lost his accuracy," he added.
Chiefs face crucial test against Denver Broncos
Seattle's defensive dominance extended beyond Mahomes, with running back Kenneth Walker III limited to 36 yards on 14 carries against his former team.
The Seahawks also prevented Kansas City from reaching the red zone, an unprecedented occurrence in Mahomes' 153 career starts, including playoff appearances.
The Chiefs now turn their attention to the Denver Broncos on November 1, hoping to demonstrate that Sunday's defeat was an isolated setback.
A 5-1 record still represents a promising start, particularly following last season's struggles, but Kansas City must find ways to compete against elite defenses.
The opportunity to answer its critics arrives quickly. Whether Mahomes can restore confidence in the offense will help determine if the Chiefs' early success reflects genuine championship potential.
