The Guardia Civil has arrested three people from Eastern European countries on suspicion of pickpocketing tourists in Valldemossa; they took advantage of their victims’ distraction to steal their belongings whilst they were not looking, including bank cards which they used to make cash withdrawals.
The investigation began in early October, when the Guardia Civil detected a rise in thefts targeting tourists visiting the town, the force said in a statement.
Investigators found that the alleged perpetrators were individuals with multiple criminal records for similar offences who, following a decline in tourist numbers in other parts of the island, had moved to various tourist resorts in the Serra de Tramuntana to steal from tourists.
After the thefts, they would quickly head to nearby cash machines to withdraw cash using the stolen bank cards, thereby also committing the offence of fraud.
Finally, the Guardia Civil in Esporles arrested three people for committing four counts of theft and four counts of bank fraud, and managed to recover approximately 5,000 euros. The investigation remains open and further arrests cannot be ruled out.
