Arsenal takes on Fleetwood Town in the Carabao Cup today, and the Gunners would be looking to win that game and avoid any type of upset. Upsets are rife in English cup games, and one of the reasons is that the top teams often underestimate the smaller clubs, so Arsenal could fall into that trap.
They want to win all the trophies, and they reached the final of the League Cup last season before losing the trophy to Manchester City. This term, they can go all the way again, but it is one game at a time, and their next challenge is at the Emirates, where they will take on Fleetwood.
Arteta’s Warning to His Players
It is a tricky game, and Mikel Arteta knows it could go wrong, having been on the Arsenal squad that lost to Bradford City in 2012, although he was an unused substitute. Ahead of this game against Town, he expects his players to be respectful of the opponent and play at their best so they can get the job done.
He said via Arsenal Media:
“Our reputation, our pride, everything is in play. So every time you play a football match, and especially against a team in a different division, respect the game, respect every opponent because they deserve to do that, and then try to win and try to play a bit better than them.
“We all have one [upset] at some stage. We know the risk, and in football, things can get very equal the moment you are able to match certain things, and that’s why our basics and habits have to be through the roof to be able to win the game.”
The Danger of Complacency
Arteta’s words are a reminder of the dangers of complacency, and the manager will demand focus from his players. The Gunners’ quality should be enough, but cup games are unpredictable.
Fleetwood will be no pushovers, and Arsenal must be at their best to avoid an upset. The fans will expect a professional performance, and the players must deliver. The Carabao Cup is a chance for silverware.
The Gunners’ ambition is to win everything, and this game is a step towards that. The manager’s experience will be key, and the players must heed his warning. The focus is on getting the job done.
