More than 200 American troops will arrive in Lithuania starting Tuesday as Washington resumes its military troop rotations in the Baltic country, President Gitanas Nausėda said.
“About 120 soldiers are here at the moment. From what I have seen, more than 200 additional soldiers will arrive starting today. This means we will probably already have almost a third of the number of troops planned to be deployed by mid-November,” Nausėda told the radio Žinių Radijas on Tuesday.
The United States has rotated troops in Lithuania every nine months since 2014. However, this summer, as Washington reviewed its military presence in Europe, the number of American troops remaining in Lithuania fell to just over 100.
In September, it was announced that two US Army battalions, comprising more than 1,000 troops in total, would arrive in Lithuania at the end of October.
The deployment is expected to maintain a US troop presence in Lithuania at a level similar to that of recent years.
