The organizers of Art Basel Qatar have named the eighty-two galleries exhibiting in its sophomore edition taking place in Msheireb Downtown, Doha, January 28–30, with preview days on January 26–27. The number of participants is down slightly from last year’s eighty-seven, despite that fact that the fair, in partnership with several state-backed groups, underwrites costs for all presenting galleries. Still, the slightly diminished figure is hardly surprising, given the continued war in Iran, just across the Persian Gulf.
Returning heavy hitters include Gagosian, Lisson Gallery, Perrotin, White Cube, and David Zwirner. The event promises lots of new blood, too: Forty percent of participants are exhibiting at the fair for the first time. Fifty percent are based in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia, while roughly 33 percent have outposts there. Among the exhibiting galleries from the immediate region are Doha’s Alhosh Gallery, Riyadh and Jeddah’s Athr, Dubai’s Efie Gallery, Abu Dhabi’s Iyad Qanazea, Giza’s Le LAB Gallery, and Beirut’s Sfeir-Semler.

The galleries will offer a total of eighty solo artist presentations, spread across three venues: Barahat Msheireb, Doha Design District, and M7. The presentations will respond to the theme “between,” chosen by the fair’s artistic director, Wassan Al-Khudhairi, who in a statement described the concept as “a liminal space of possibility, where different perspectives, histories and ideas meet and new ways of seeing emerge.”
