- Debate set for 28 October at the Grenada Trade Centre
- Mitchell, Pierre and David to discuss key national issues
- Voters to hear leaders’ positions ahead of 5 November election
The leaders of Grenada’s three political parties fielding the most candidates have confirmed their participation in a national debate on Wednesday, 28 October, ahead of the 5 November general election.
The event, titled Grenada’s Choice 2026: The National Leaders’ Debate, will take place at the Grenada Trade Centre from 7 pm before a live audience. Organised jointly by the Media Workers Association of Grenada (MWAG), Grenada Broadcasting Network (GBN), The Bubb Report and the Grenada Conference of Churches, the 2-hour programme will include 90 minutes of structured debate under the theme: The Issues. The Choices. Grenada’s Future.
The participants are Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Opposition Leader Emmalin Pierre of the New National Party (NNP), and Peter David of the Democratic People’s Movement (DPM).
The 3 leaders bring different political backgrounds to the platform. Mitchell, a lawyer, entered frontline politics in 2021 before leading the NDC to victory in the 2022 general election. Pierre, a former teacher and government minister, became the NNP’s first female political leader and was appointed Leader of the Opposition in March 2025. David has represented the Town of St George in 4 general elections since 2003 and has held ministerial portfolios including foreign affairs, tourism and agriculture.
According to the organisers, the debate will address the economy and cost of living, healthcare, education, employment, governance, accountability and Grenada’s long-term development. Representatives of all 3 parties met with the National Leaders Debate Committee on Thursday to discuss arrangements, including the rules, moderators and live audience. Further details about the moderators, audience arrangements and broadcast platforms are expected to be announced.
The NDC and NNP are each fielding 15 candidates for the election, while the DPM is contesting 9 constituencies. However, they are not the only parties seeking votes on 5 November. Other political parties are also contesting seats, but their leaders are not included among the participants named by the organisers.
With the election 8 days afterwards on 5 November, the debate will give viewers an opportunity to hear the 3 leaders explain their positions on issues affecting Grenadians. The discussion will also offer voters a chance to compare their proposals on matters ranging from household expenses and public services to employment and government accountability before deciding who will represent them in the next parliamentary term.
