It might sound faintly ridiculous given his tender age, youthful looks and his relative lack of experience in the top flight, but in some ways, Chris Rigg is already something of a Sunderland veteran.
In early 2027, four eventful and transformative years will have passed since the homegrown prodigy made his first appearence in red and white at first team level, and in the intervening period, he’s become a mainstay as we’ve endured setbacks, punishing lows and unforgettable highs.
Rigg made his debut when Tony Mowbray was in the dugout and a carefree Sunderland team was making its way through the Championship. Fast forward to 2026 and he’s graduated to the Régis Le Bris school of Premier League football, and he’s done it without missing a beat and rising to every challenge he’s been set.
Like Luke O’Nien and Trai Hume — fixtures in red and white since the club’s final months in League One and even further back than that in O’Nien’s case — Rigg has established himself as a tenacious, reliable and exceptionally exciting player. That backheeled winner against Middlesbrough may be two years previous, but it was at that stage that we began to get a better sense of what he’s all about.
On Sunday, Rigg racked up his one hundredth first team appearance for the Lads — and duly marked the occasion with a typically tenacious display during Sunderland’s scrappy home draw with Leeds.
Rigg mightn’t be a winger by trade and his chances of a sustained run in the middle may be slim at this stage thanks to the presence of the likes of Enzo Le Fée, but that doesn’t seem to faze him. A hard worker with talent to burn, he was quite possibly one of our most solid performers on Sunday and that sits nicely alongside his efforts in the Europa League.
Rigg’s rise to prominence is one of the fruits of his own labours.
It’s also a product of his willingness to listen, learn and improve, as well as Kristjaan Speakman’s (a figure I actually happen to think we miss at Sunderland in some respects) long-held belief that showing faith in Cleadon’s talented youngsters would eventually pay dividends. Promotion-winning captain Dan Neil may have left for Rangers, but Rigg remains — a player very much of the here and now, and hopefully a tremendous talent of the future, too.
I’ve long believed that local players that graduate to the Sunderland first team are judged by different standards to those that come from far and wide to play for our club.
As lads that in many cases grew up watching and experiencing the highs and lows of following the club, they’re living all of our dreams and enjoying the kinds of lifestyles that we ourselves might’ve been fortunate enough to experience had the cards fallen differently.
Writing this article as a slightly portly thirty-seven year-old with dodgy knees and a right ankle that’s riddled with arthritis, seeing the likes of Rigg doing so well isn’t a source of bitterness — it’s one of real pride.
We tend to get excited when exotic signings arrive from glamorous clubs on foreign shores, but as Speakman himself might well have said, balancing that with a steady stream of talented academy graduates is important, if not the easiest feat to accomplish.
In recent times, Rigg’s become a red and white stalwart and Neil became the first homegrown Sunderland skipper since Raich Carter to lift a trophy at Wembley. Elsewhere, Anthony Patterson is a double promotion-winning goalkeeper and although Tommy Watson’s post-Sunderland career has arguably not yet taken off, he signed off on the most spectacular note possible, scoring a timeless Wembley winner in 2025.
These success stories are important.
They changed the perception of Sunderland AFC to that of a club where youth could thrive rather than being crushed by the weight of expectation. We may be enduring a challenging and not altogether pleasant start to 2026/2027, but that doesn’t detract from Rigg’s achievement whatsoever and he’ll doubtless be doing his utmost in the weeks to come in order to try and haul us out of the mire.
To reach this landmark for any football club would represent an occasion worthy of recognition.
To do it at a club such as Sunderland given the winds of change that’ve blown through the Stadium of Light in recent times is seriously impressive, and to reach the mark whilst still a teenager is something truly exceptional.
From that memorable afternoon at Craven Cottage where Rigg was only denied a fairytale FA Cup goal by a marginal decision, to the heights of the Premier League and Europa League away trips, it’s been a hell of a journey and with any luck, it’ll have plenty of mileage remaining.
Congratulations, Riggy.
