United Democratic Front (UDF) president Atupele Muluzi has taken the first visible step in his promised party reforms by appointing lawyer and former broadcaster Ian Nankhuni as the party’s new National Publicity Secretary.

The appointment, which takes immediate effect, comes as Muluzi pushes ahead with plans to restructure and revitalise the former ruling party following its years on the political sidelines.
Nankhuni’s elevation was announced in a statement issued by the Office of the Secretary General, with UDF describing the move as part of wider efforts to build a more vibrant, inclusive and responsive political organisation.
The new publicity chief brings a diverse background to the position. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theology from the University of Malawi and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from the Catholic University of Malawi.
He is also a familiar face and voice to many Malawians after working as a radio and television presenter with Times Group.
The party believes his blend of legal expertise, communications experience and commitment to democratic accountability will strengthen its engagement with the public and help articulate the UDF’s policies, values and vision.
The appointment follows a recent meeting between Muluzi and Secretary General Genarino Lemani at the party’s National Secretariat in Blantyre, where the two discussed reforms aimed at reshaping and modernising the party.
In remarks signalling a broader renewal drive, Muluzi said the planned reforms would create a more representative UDF capable of responding to the aspirations of Malawians and meeting future political challenges.
“Our commitment to reform, renewal and opening up remains firm as we work to strengthen our party and uphold the rule of law in Malawi,” Muluzi said.
The reform agenda comes as political parties continue repositioning themselves following the 2025 General Election, with the UDF seeking to rebuild its influence and relevance in Malawi’s political landscape.
While the party has yet to spell out the full details of the restructuring exercise, Nankhuni’s appointment is being seen as an early sign of Muluzi’s determination to refresh the party’s leadership structures and public image.
Secretary General Lemani congratulated Nankhuni on his appointment and wished him success in his new role.
