THE Brazilian president’s run-off election win on Sunday has led to congratulations from Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez who promised a similar outcome in November’s general election.
Leftist Lula de Silva clinched an unprecedented victory- the first person to come from behind on the first ballot- to beat right-winger, Flavio Bolsonaro, who was regarded as the favourite.
“Great victory for Lula! What has happened in Brazil, will happen in Spain. The comeback of global progressivism has just begun,” Pedro Sanchez posted on his X account.

Lo que ha pasado en Brasil, pasará en España.
La remontada del progresismo global acaba de comenzar.
His socialist PSOE party also congratulated the Brazilian president via social media
“With the strength of the people, Brazil has wanted to continue advancing. On 29N, progress in Spain will follow that path,” the message reads.
Opinion polls in Spain however have constantly shown the conservative Partido Popular and the far-right Vox party easily getting a combination of seats in next month’s election to oust Sanchez from power.
Spanish government spokesperson and minister, Elma Saiz, also congratulated Lula on securing a fourth term during an interview with Cadena Ser radio.
Meanwhile, the Transport Minister Oscar Puente, said the result was a ‘stimulus’ for the PSOE and progressives as he noted that ‘the cycle of the extreme right is beginning to change’.
Speaking at a breakfast forum in Madrid, Puente described Lula’s victory as ‘a breath of hope’.
He not cited Brazil as a sign of change that he hopes will also be consolidated in Spain but mentioned Sunday’s ousting of a right-wing government in Serbia.
Brazil is indicative of what ‘we have been experiencing in recent weeks’ in Spain, said Puente.
“The PSOE is very fit and very eager and Brazil is just the beginning,” he concluded.
