Tavira cyclist Miguel Figueira has returned home after completing an extraordinary round-the-world journey by bicycle, almost 17 months after setting off alone.
Figueira left Tavira on June 2, 2025, beginning a journey of thousands of kilometres that took him across Europe and far beyond.

His adventure was born after he lost his job as a software developer in late 2024, prompting him to finally pursue a long-held dream of cycling around the world, he told NIT magazine last year.
During the trip, he typically covered 400 to 600 kilometres a week, frequently camping and carrying everything he needed on his bicycle, including tools, a tent, first-aid equipment and cameras to document the journey.
Among the countries he crossed were Spain, France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Turkey, later reaching Central Asia. At one point in Uzbekistan, he completed a mammoth 257-kilometre ride in a single day.

Figueira finally returned to Tavira on October 25, where he was welcomed at town hall by family, friends and council representatives.
Tavira Council hailed his achievement as an inspiring example of adventure, determination and overcoming challenges, saying his journey had carried the city’s name far beyond Portugal.
