A North Carolina state Senate candidate was arrested Monday after an hours-long standoff with police, which he detailed as it was happening in a series of posts to social platform X.
Jonathan D. Miller, a Libertarian running to represent North Carolina State Senate District 16, was arrested at about 3 p.m. after the standoff, which occurred at his apartment complex near the Lochmere neighborhood in Cary, N.C., according to local news station WRAL.
“The whole police department is chasing me with guns drawn. This should be fun,” Miller said in a morning X post.
“I’ve got six shots and the high ground. I hope they don’t find me, but if they do it’s going to be a hell of a show,” the candidate followed with a comment on the post.
The Cary Police Department said officers conducted a welfare check at about 8:26 a.m. at Miller’s home, WRAL reported. At a Monday news conference, police chief Terry Sult said when authorities found Miller, “he had a firearm and was ordered not to touch it, and he took off running.”
Authorities said Miller is facing charges of communicating threats, resisting officers and going armed to the terror of the public, WRAL reported. The candidate’s court appearance is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Wake County, N.C.
Authorities said no one was injured in the standoff. Miller reportedly made several calls to WRAL while he was standing off with police, telling the outlet he had posted a suicide note to social media the night prior which had “gone super viral.”
Miller is running against incumbent state Sen. Gale Adcock (D) and Republican Philip Hensley.
