Liverpool Face Major Alexis Mac Allister Contract Decision as David Lynch Gives Verdict
Liverpool face a significant decision over Alexis Mac Allister’s long-term future, with journalist David Lynch arguing that the club should resist offering the midfielder a new contract despite his impressive performances.
Speaking to Dave Davis on Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, Lynch made his position clear. He believes Mac Allister has been excellent this season, but Liverpool must consider the financial and sporting implications of committing to a lengthy deal.
The discussion came after Davis highlighted reports that Liverpool’s aim at the time was not to offer Mac Allister a new contract. Davis questioned whether that approach made sense if the Argentine continued performing at his current level, particularly given his importance to Liverpool’s midfield.
Lynch’s response offered a different perspective, focusing on the risks of long-term squad planning and the possibility of investing in a younger alternative.
David Lynch Praises Mac Allister’s Liverpool Performances
Mac Allister’s form was not the issue for Lynch. He acknowledged the midfielder’s contribution while explaining why he would still favour Liverpool holding their position on a new deal.
“My personal view is I think Mac Allister has been absolutely fantastic this season, but I wouldn’t offer him a new deal,” Lynch told Davis.
It was a clear assessment of the challenge facing Liverpool. A player can perform to a high standard and remain important to the team, yet the club must still decide whether a new contract fits its longer-term plans.
Davis raised the possibility that supporters could question Liverpool’s decision if Mac Allister continued playing well. The discussion also touched on the strength of Liverpool’s midfield unit, with Lynch praising the balance the coach had established.
That balance makes the contract question more complicated. Liverpool have reasons to value Mac Allister’s contribution, but Lynch believes the club must assess his future over the full length of a potential agreement rather than allowing current performances to determine the outcome.
Five-Year Contract Could Carry Long-Term Risks
Lynch’s main concern was the likely length of Mac Allister’s next contract. He noted that the midfielder was approaching 28 and suggested that any new agreement would probably last five years.
“And the next contract will be five years,” Lynch said. “There’s no question about that.”
That would potentially keep Mac Allister at Liverpool into his early thirties. Lynch argued that the club must consider the possibility of a decline in performance during that period, alongside the financial commitment that a new deal could involve.
He also pointed to Mac Allister’s difficulties during the previous season, saying those struggles should remain part of Liverpool’s thinking even while recognising the midfielder’s more recent form.
Lynch was not suggesting that Mac Allister had failed to deliver. His argument was that Liverpool need to weigh the player’s current quality against the risks that come with committing significant resources over several years.
For a club planning its midfield for the future, that calculation could prove decisive.

Lamine Camara and Manu Koné Enter the Midfield Discussion
Potential recruitment alternatives formed another part of the conversation between Lynch and Davis.
Lynch suggested Liverpool could potentially receive a transfer fee from a Spanish club for Mac Allister and reinvest that money in a younger midfielder who could help future-proof the position.
Lamine Camara was discussed as one possible option, with Lynch later indicating that, as he understood the situation, Camara was relatively high on Liverpool’s list. Manu Koné was also mentioned, with Davis noting that the French midfielder had admirers within the club’s hierarchy.
Lynch said Liverpool could consider whether a younger player would bring quality to the team and fit the manager’s approach. However, neither midfielder was presented as a confirmed replacement for Mac Allister, and no completed transfer decision was reported.
The wider point was about planning ahead. Liverpool could have several midfield targets under consideration, and Lynch believes those options should form part of the assessment of Mac Allister’s future.
Liverpool Must Make a Long-Term Decision
Lynch’s stance was firm, even though he recognised that resisting a new contract could prove unpopular with supporters.
“I would prefer that they stick to the guns on that and make that unpopular decision,” he told Davis.
His view was that Liverpool should remain consistent with their recruitment strategy if they believe committing to Mac Allister carries too much long-term risk. A strong season should be recognised, but it should not automatically force the club to abandon its plans.
The conversation does not confirm that Liverpool have made a final decision on Mac Allister’s future. It does, however, underline the competing considerations involved, from his performances and importance in midfield to his age, contract length and possible alternatives in the transfer market.
Mac Allister’s form gives Liverpool a compelling reason to consider keeping him, but Lynch believes the club must look beyond the immediate picture. For him, the key question is whether a five-year commitment represents the best decision for Liverpool’s midfield over the longer term.
