Is crypto dead? Traders divided as Bitcoin search interest falls

A fresh debate over cryptocurrency’s future has erupted on X after trader Rex declared the industry finished, drawing opposing views from market participants as Bitcoin struggles around $80,000 and public search interest continues to weaken.

According to an October 27 post from Rex, cryptocurrency is “pretty much finished as an industry,” a claim that prompted responses from Mert, Gum and other commentators. Their disagreement centered on whether declining speculative interest represents the end of crypto’s growth or a transition toward financial infrastructure and established businesses.

The discussion follows months of weaker market sentiment, with Bitcoin trading considerably below its October 2025 peak. Although the participants offered different interpretations of the industry’s prospects, their posts did not establish a common view among investors.

Crypto industry debate divides traders over its future

Rex’s brief statement attracted attention from commentators who disagreed over what constitutes an industry’s success. While the original post gave no specific financial or adoption figures, the responses introduced competing views of cryptocurrency’s development.

Mert rejected the prediction, writing that “crypto is pretty much just getting started as an industry.” His response presented a more optimistic assessment without identifying a particular market catalyst or timeline for renewed growth.

Gum offered a different explanation, arguing that cryptocurrency was becoming less defined by speculation and more connected to commercial blockchain applications. In an October 27 post, he wrote, “there is blockchain infrastructure” and businesses operating on it.

He argued that participants would increasingly need to examine company financials, growth and business narratives as the industry developed. His description of crypto becoming less exciting for speculative traders concerned its business model, not the disappearance of digital assets.

Another commentator, Rahul, challenged the recurring prediction, writing that people make similar claims during every market cycle. Meanwhile, The Hunter criticized the industry for failing to deliver its original promises of financial freedom, describing it as an “exit liquidity machine.”

Bitcoin struggles around $80,000 as sentiment weakens

The disagreement emerged during another difficult period for Bitcoin, which had retreated from approximately $85,000 the previous week. As crypto.news previously reported on the decline, Bitcoin traded near $79,947 on October 26 after falling to $79,332 during the session.

Market participants were preparing for the Federal Reserve’s October 28 interest rate decision, alongside inflation figures and major technology company earnings. Bitcoin’s ability to recover above $80,000 remained uncertain following its failure to hold higher prices.

The market’s decline provides context for the pessimistic comments, although the individual posts offer no evidence that price weakness has caused businesses to abandon blockchain technology. Their conclusions concern the industry’s future, which cannot be established through short-term trading performance alone.

Bitcoin Google searches point to falling retail attention

Public interest has weakened alongside cryptocurrency prices, according to Google Trends observations. Worldwide searches for “Bitcoin” reportedly reached a relative score of 20 during October 18–24, 2026, compared with peaks near 100 across the preceding five-year period.

Google Trends measures relative search popularity on a scale from zero to 100, with 100 representing the highest interest within the selected location and period. A reading of 20 therefore does not mean search activity has fallen to 20 searches or that cryptocurrency ownership has declined by 80%.

The latest figure is consistent with previously documented weakness in retail attention. In June, an analysis of search activity found that worldwide interest in cryptocurrency had fallen considerably from its 2025 highs, even though Bitcoin remained well above prices seen during the previous bear market.

As crypto.news reported earlier today, an Ipsos survey found that 35% of Americans considered political support for financial innovation important, compared with just 13% when blockchain, cryptocurrency and DeFi were explicitly mentioned. The survey further found that only 9% were highly familiar with cryptocurrency, while just 5% expressed substantial trust in decentralized platforms.

Search trends capture public curiosity but cannot directly measure exchange trading, institutional purchases or blockchain settlement activity. The October reading offers one measure of reduced attention, while the precise weekly figure still requires confirmation against the original Google Trends series.

Institutional blockchain projects continue despite market doubts

Institutional activity provides a separate measure of developments beyond cryptocurrency price movements. On October 14, BNY and Citadel Securities completed a tokenized Treasury financing transaction, using a blockchain-based security as collateral within an established triparty repurchase agreement platform.

The transaction involved a two-year U.S. Treasury note represented on BNY’s private ledger before being used to secure overnight financing. BNY did not disclose the transaction’s value or financing rate, although it confirmed that settlement took place within minutes.

Stablecoin applications have continued developing as well. On October 23, HSBC introduced its RedCoin stablecoin to Hong Kong customers, reporting HK$80.58 million in circulating tokens backed by HK$81.58 million in reserves.

HSBC plans to provide access to tokenized money market fund subscriptions through its banking application before the end of 2026. Its proposed entry-level investment of HK$100 forms part of the bank’s planned integration between digital payments and tokenized investment products.
