Around 30 members of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), Coimbatore District Committee, staged a protest in front of the District Collectorate in Coimbatore on Monday condemning the rise in prices of essential commodities.
As part of the protest, the participants wore symbolic garlands made of paper, with pulses and rice grains stuck to them using glue, to highlight the rising cost of essential food items. The protest was presided over by district president M. Amutha.
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Coimbatore city unit, submitted a petition to the Collector on Monday, seeking a speedy and impartial investigation into the death of schoolboy Akilan and measures to ensure the safety of students.
The organisation urged the authorities to bring out the full facts surrounding the boy’s death, constitute a district-level school monitoring committee and install complaint boxes for students in all schools.
The ABVP also called for steps to strengthen student safety and ensure that grievances raised by students were addressed.
Separately, members of the Tamil Nadu Nutritious Meal and Anganwadi Pensioners Association staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate on Monday, demanding a minimum monthly pension of ₹6,750 along with dearness allowance and medical insurance.
