(ANSA) - ROME, 27 OTT - Deputy Premier, Transport Minister and League leader Matteo Salvini said Tuesday that he was confident the government will be able to insert a mechanism giving people the option to start claiming their State pension at the age of 64 in the 2027 budget law The current retirement age is 67 and this is set to gradually rise on the basis of life expectancy here, according to the current system.
"The League's priority for some time now has been to repeal the Fornero law and and we've finally gotten there," Salvini told Radio 24 referring to the current State pension system brought in by former labour minister Elsa Fornero during ex-premier Mario Monti's 2011-2013 emergency austerity administration.
"So it will be possible to give three extra years of life to those who choose to retire at the age of 64 instead of 67.
"I am confident that we will be able to fulfil a commitment the League made several years ago; in previous budget laws, we were unable to see it through due to other issues.
"The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) and the National Social Security Institute (INPS) are estimating the cost; there will certainly be sufficient funding to ensure that those who have paid into the system at least get back what they contributed.
"There is an agreement (within the government) and the funding.
"As with other spending items, we have more meetings scheduled, but I'm confident".
The deputy premier added that Premier Giorgia Meloni's cabinet is likely to sign off on the 2027 budget bill on Wednesday.
