Suspected assassins have killed a prominent Islamic preacher, Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka, at his residence in Dutsin-Ma town, Katsina State.
Multiple sources said the gunmen opened fire on the cleric and two other associates of the peace preacher around 8:30pm on Monday before fleeing on motorcycles.
Condemning the death, Amnesty International called on the Nigerian authorities to immediately and effectively investigate the incident and ensure that those suspected of being responsible are brought to justice.
“Sheik Yahaya Masussuka had consistently used his preaching to promote cooperation, peaceful coexistence, interfaith dialogue and understanding among Muslim faithful. He was also notable for preaching against violent extremism and radicalization.
The late Islamic cleric faced threats to life and intimidation — all through his life,” Amnesty said in a terse statement.
