By Zoila Palma: French President Emmanuel Macron has promised government measures in response to weeks of protests over the cost of living, public services, and other grievances.
Today, Macron said he had asked his government to address the demands driving the growing social movement while acknowledging the possibility of further unrest.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu was expected to hold a news conference following a meeting with high school student unions demanding more resources for education and reforms to the university admissions system, which they say perpetuates inequality. The protests have expanded beyond students, attracting trade unions and “yellow vest” activists protesting economic pressures and the rising cost of living.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said authorities expected further disturbances during demonstrations planned for October 31.
Police deployed approximately 70,000 officers nationwide during Saturday’s protests, and Nuñez reported that 1,435 people were arrested. He also said organized far-right groups had confronted far-left activists in several cities, including Nice and Montpellier.
Despite the heavy security presence, business leaders warned that the unrest was continuing to hurt the economy.
