Bollywood star Aamir Khan has offered an update on the much-anticipated sequel to “3 Idiots”, revealing that director Rajkumar Hirani is working on the script and may soon share its latest version with him.
Speaking at the Singapore International Film Festival, Aamir said Hirani was developing the screenplay and hoped to narrate the final version to him within the next few weeks.
“I’m not allowed to say a lot. I think I can say this much, and yes, Raju is working on the script. In fact, hopefully, once I’m back in the next couple of weeks, he’s going to narrate the final version to me. So, fingers crossed,” the actor said.
The update has renewed interest in a possible follow-up to the 2009 comedy-drama, which was directed by Hirani and starred Aamir alongside R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Kareena Kapoor Khan.
In an earlier interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Hirani confirmed that he was still developing the screenplay, while acknowledging that considerable work remained.
The filmmaker said the story would explore what happens to the central characters 15 to 20 years after the events of the original film. Rather than returning to their college days, the sequel would follow them into adulthood, as they navigate marriage, parenthood and the challenges of a midlife crisis.
Meanwhile, Aamir also spoke about another beloved Bollywood comedy, “Andaz Apna Apna”, at the festival, where audiences expressed their affection for the film.
Asked whether a second instalment was in the works, the actor revealed that filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi was working on something related to the project. However, he stopped short of confirming whether it would be a sequel and offered no further details.
Although neither project has received a definitive confirmation of its release plans, Aamir’s remarks have fuelled speculation about the possible return of two popular films.
