UConn men's basketball star Silas Demary Jr. continues to cement his status as one of the nation's top point guards, earning a spot on the preseason watch list for the 2027 Bob Cousy Award.
Named after the legendary Holy Cross and Boston Celtics star, the Bob Cousy Award honors the best point guard in college basketball each year, beginning with Monday's watch list of 20 players. In February, this group will be narrowed to 10 players, and in March, a list of five finalists will be presented to Cousy and the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame to name a winner.
Demary was also named to last season's preseason watch list ahead of his debut season with the Huskies and provided a two-way ball-handling and perimeter defensive presence that was sorely missing on coach Dan Hurley's previous team. The Georgia transfer posted one of the highest assist rates in college basketball while poking free 1.6 steals per game and shooting nearly 40% from 3-point range.
By the time the list of Bob Cousy Award semifinalists began to finalize, Demary was also directing arguably the best team in college basketball, as the Huskies entered February on a 17-game winning streak with a 21-1 record. Still, the Hall of Fame ultimately did not include Demary among the semifinalists, much to the chagrin of Hurley.
"I don't know who's on there," Hurley said. "There's obviously a lot of deserving players. We're one of the best teams in the country this year; we've played to it. Our resume says what our resume says. He's played at an incredibly high level."
"I don't know the other 10 players and I'm not going to sit here and take shots at them. But that's B.S. Total B.S."
UConn fans can help Demary avoid another possible snub, as the Bob Cousy Award also includes a fan vote. The first round of fan voting begins Oct. 30 on the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame website.
