On the surface, most modern charging cables look nearly identical to one another. Especially in today's USB-C age, you'd be forgiven for thinking two seemingly run-of-the-mill, average cables were essentially one and the same. The fact of the matter, however, is that Type-C cables can differ quite dramatically from one another, and that some cables are poised to stand the test of time, while others are decidedly not.
On a physical level, Type-C cords are often made of hard or rubberized plastic, with others being made of a woven fabric material. The latter tends to be the preferred material from a longevity standpoint, and more and more cable manufacturers are beginning to embrace it as a result. That being said, plastic-clad cords are a spectrum -- some are thicker and therefore more resilient to the elements than others.
Then, there are outer jackets. Some Type-C cords feature protective collars as a form of strain relief, which can significantly improve the long-term vitality of said cables. Other manufacturers, including Apple, forgo outer jackets entirely for aesthetic reasons, which certainly makes for a cleaner appearance, but doesn't do any favors for ruggedness.
Not all cables are created equal
Some cords will outlast their contemporaries
Turning to the technical side of things, USB-C cables vary greatly in terms of their performance metrics. Type-C cables can offer a variety of charging speeds, ranging anywhere from 15W (5V at 3A) at the low end all the way to 240W (48V at 5A) at the high end. How much wattage a given cable can handle depends on which version of USB Power Delivery (USB PD) it makes use of, with cables rated for 60W or higher required to feature a built-in E-Marker microchip to safely negotiate voltage and current limits.
Data bandwidth is another story altogether, with many Type-C charging cables only being compatible with the decades-old USB 2.0 specification (480 Mbps). More expensive cables offer a broader range of bandwidth capabilities, with the latest cables managing a whopping theoretical 80 Gbps via USB4 Version 2.0 or Thunderbolt 5. These high-bandwidth cables also tend to feature thicker shielding, which helps avoid kinks and bends, but the downside is that they're also shorter on average.
Of course, how much wattage and bandwidth you require will depend on your individual use case. There's no immediate need to throw out all your older 15W / 480 Mbps Type-C cables simply because they can't drive higher-powered peripherals, but, in the long-term, these older cables will begin to feel antiquated as technology progresses. There's no specific 'best before' date on these cables, but I reckon they'll begin to feel noticeably outdated in the next 10-15 years.
Some cables look and feel better than others
Aesthetics, robustness, length, wattage: plenty of factors to keep in mind
In my personal opinion, Apple makes some of the very best looking basic charging cables on the market. They feature an iconic white colorway that stands out from the crowd, and, as of late, they also come clad with a woven fabric material and a seamless design sans outer jacket. They also feature some of the most compact shielding out there, which makes them look and feel technically impressive. The problem with Apple's cords is that they're particularly susceptible to discoloration, which is a shame.
My favorite general-purpose Type-C cable is, interestingly enough, the one that comes with the Nintendo Switch 2 and its associated peripherals. These cables are nice and lengthy, they're fortified with a dedicated outer jacket, and, importantly, they have a robust feeling without being stiff or hard to maneuver. There's just something extremely pleasant about the Switch 2's cables that's hard to quantify or to describe with words.
In the end, charging speeds are limited by the slowest link in the chain.
Like many other people, I also have a collection of generic Type-C cables stowed away in a junk drawer, and these cords are rather hit or miss. Most of them are cheap feeling, and most of them are unable to carry much power or bandwidth to speak of. These cables aren't entirely useless -- they're perfectly serviceable for connecting a mouse or a keyboard to a PC, for example -- but they're far from ideal for most other use cases.
For charging your phone and other portable electronic gadgets, a very basic USB-C cable is probably enough to get you by, both now and into the future. Most cables from reputable brands are more than capable of delivering quick top-up speeds, with the real bottleneck often being the AC adapter (charging block) and the device itself. In the end, charging speeds are limited by the slowest link in the chain, so to speak. However, I'd be wary of relying on generic charging cables from no-name brands -- such cables might introduce performance or even safety issues into the mix, which is obviously not ideal.
