Albuquerque-based UNM Health System is diverting all ambulance traffic to other hospitals and has canceled all clinic appointments Oct. 26 as it responds to a cybersecurity issue.
UNM Health officials are working to resolve the issue, according to a news release, which did not describe the nature of the problem or say when normal operations would resume.
UNM Health told patients they “should not show up to UNM Health facilities on October 26.” Patients with emergencies should call 911, and those with nonemergency needs should delay care until further notice, the release said.
The issue is affecting all of UNM Health Sciences Center. Nonessential employees and students at its School of Medicine, College of Pharmacy, College of Nursing and College of Population Health were told to leave campus for the rest of the day. Clinical and essential employees were exempt.
The system did not say whether patient data was affected or whether the incident involved ransomware.
UNM Health operates New Mexico’s only level 1 trauma center and only academic medical center, along with the state’s largest teaching hospital.
The system, which reports more than 1 million patient visits each year, includes UNM Hospital, UNM Children’s Hospital, UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center in Rio Rancho and UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center.
