SHILLONG, Oct 26: The Shillong Sohra Tourist Taxi Owners and Drivers Association (SSTTODA) has submitted a reminder to the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB), demanding the immediate installation of proper lighting and toilet facilities at the MUDA parking stand in Iew Mawlong.
In a letter to SMB Chief Executive Officer PK Boro on Monday, the association stated that the stand—located on the second floor of the MUDA building opposite Rani Motors—has lacked adequate illumination and sanitation facilities for an extended period.
The taxi body pointed out that the unlit parking lot poses serious safety risks, particularly for women and children boarding cabs bound for Sohra, Shella, and Mawkyrwat.
SSTTODA secretary Shanlang Diengdoh said the association had initially submitted a formal representation on July 9, but the municipal board failed to act on the request despite multiple resolutions passed by its executive committee on May 23, July 4, and August 13.
Seeking broader administrative support to resolve the long-pending issue, the association has also forwarded copies of the memorandum to Sohra MLA Gavin Miquel Mylliem, Shella MLA Balajied Synrem, and Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton L Tongkhar.
The association urged the civic authorities to address the deficiencies without further delay, noting that functional toilets and adequate lighting are basic necessities critical to passenger safety and public hygiene.
