Maybe you've deleted the dating apps. Maybe you've stopped entertaining the guy who only remembers you exist after 10 p.m. Or maybe the thought of sitting across from another stranger, explaining what you do for work and how many siblings you have sounds about as appealing as a root canal.
Whatever the reason, you've decided you're not dating right now. And apparently, it seems like everyone you tell this to has some type of question. Are you heartbroken? Have you given up on love? Aren't you lonely? And, perhaps most importantly to the nosiest people in your life, Does this mean you're not having sex?
Take one of my girlfriends, for example. After moving to New York City in 2022, she spent much of her first few years wrapped up in a relationship. Since their breakup two years ago, she hasn't really been dating. Not because she's heartbroken or has given up on love, but because she's been busy building a life of her own. She's made lasting friendships, explored new neighborhoods, picked up hobbies, and even gotten a dog. Not to distract herself from being single, but because these are things she genuinely wants to do.
She's open to love. She even checks the apps occasionally. But unless her dog's leash gets tangled with that of a particularly attractive stranger at the park, dating simply isn't a priority.
And that's the thing about not dating: It doesn't necessarily mean you're lonely, healing, closed off to romance, or even celibate. Sometimes folks simply aren't interested in dating, full stop.
So, I asked relationship experts to debunk five of the biggest misconceptions about not dating, including where celibacy fits into the picture.
Misconception #1: If You're Not Dating, You've Given Up on Love
There's a difference between not wanting a relationship and not wanting to date. You can absolutely want to fall in love, get married, and live out your happily-ever-after fantasy while also wanting nothing to do with dating apps, awkward first dates, or another situationship that goes nowhere.
"There's often a misconception that everyone who isn't dating doesn't want a relationship," says Alyssa Digges, a mental health counselor at Insight Therapy NYC. "Some don't, but some deeply crave a relationship, they've just burned out on modern dating."
And fair enough. Wanting a partner doesn't automatically mean you have the energy to go looking for one, especially when dating starts to feel more like an obligation than something you're genuinely excited about.
For some people, stepping away is temporary. "I actually see the opposite when people take a break from dating," says Dr. Sabrina Romanoff, PsyD, a clinical psychologist and relationship expert at Hily, of the assumption of giving up on love. "This usually stems from their intentional decision to reinvest their energy, become the best version of themselves, and eventually return to their dating life in a better position."
But here's the thing: Not everyone who's stopped dating is planning their big return to the apps. Not dating doesn't have to be a phase you eventually graduate from, and it certainly doesn't have to be a strategy for finding love.
Whether you're taking a break, leaving the door open for something unexpected, or happily keeping it closed, your decision doesn't require an expiration date.
Misconception #2: You Must Be Lonely
Sure, being single can get lonely sometimes. So can being in a relationship. Having a significant other isn't some magical guarantee that you'll never feel alone again.
"Romantic relationships are only one way people can find connection," says Romanoff. "There are many other ways people can find connection and fulfillment, including with friends, family, colleagues, and by making new connections."
She also points out that plenty of people in long-term relationships experience loneliness and isolation. In other words, being coupled up and feeling connected aren't necessarily the same thing.
For someone who's not dating, connection might come from spending more time with friends, strengthening family relationships, or investing in a community. And without the time and energy that dating can demand, there may be more room for those relationships to flourish.
"I won't pretend that being single can't feel lonely sometimes, but many of the single people I work with have full, rich lives filled with love and support," says Digges.
Being single doesn't automatically mean being lonely, just as being in a relationship doesn't automatically mean being fulfilled. And while romantic intimacy is its own kind of connection, it isn't the only one worth having. A Saturday night spent with your friends–or solo–isn't inherently less meaningful than one spent with a partner.
Misconception #3: Something Must Be Wrong With You
There's a strange cultural tendency to treat being single as a problem that needs solving. If you're not dating, people assume you either can't find someone, are too picky, or have some emotional baggage keeping you from putting yourself out there.
"Being single or partnered carries significant weight in our culture as if it assigns your value or worth," says Romanoff. She explains that the longstanding idea that marriage is a woman's greatest accomplishment can be difficult to shake, even today.
And when being partnered is treated as the default, choosing not to date can seem like a decision that requires an explanation. Suddenly, everyone from your mother to your married friend who hasn't been single since college has a theory about why you're still on your own.
But being single doesn't necessarily mean you're struggling to find someone willing to date you.
"It's not that no one wants them, but rather they haven't found someone they truly want," says Digges of many of the single people she works with.
She also pushes back against the idea that being selective means your standards are too high. While superficial preferences, like a specific height or appearance, might be worth reconsidering, she argues that values-based standards are another matter entirely.
For Digges, qualities like kindness, compassion, and intelligence aren't things someone should have to compromise on just to find a partner. Having those standards might narrow your dating pool, but it can also help you avoid relationships that wouldn't have been right for you.
And for people who aren't interested in dating at all, there's no need to defend their standards, attractiveness, or relationship potential in the first place. Being single isn't evidence of a personal deficiency.
Misconception #4: You Must Be Healing From Something
The phrase "taking a break from dating" often comes with the assumption that something terrible must have happened first. A breakup, a betrayal, a particularly brutal situationship—surely there's an ex somewhere responsible for this decision. And sometimes there is! Taking time to heal after a difficult relationship can be a perfectly valid reason to step away from dating.
But not every person who's stopped dating is nursing a broken heart, recovering from a toxic ex, or embarking on a post-break-up journey of self-discovery.
"Not dating is often a choice, not a waiting room," says licensed mental health counselor Anna Green, co-founder and chief clinical officer at Thrive Mental Health. "Plenty of adults step back from dating to rebuild friendships, focus on work, or just stop performing for apps."
My friend's experience is a perfect example. After spending so much of her early New York life in a relationship, she's finally getting to experience the city on her own terms. And while the breakup may have been what initially made that possible, it isn't what's keeping her single. She's not spending her weekends distracting herself from her ex. She's spending them doing things she actually enjoys, with people she loves.
There’s a difference between healing from a relationship and remaining single after realizing how much you enjoy life without one.
There's also a tendency to frame every dating break as an opportunity to become the best version of yourself before eventually finding a partner. And while self-reflection can be beneficial, your time outside the dating pool doesn't have to be productive, transformative, or preparation for anything.
Aimee Evnin-Bingham, LMFT, an AASECT-certified sex and relationship therapist, says that when her clients become frustrated with dating, she encourages them to revisit why they want to date in the first place. If the answer is simply that they feel they should be dating, that's worth examining.
How often are we pursuing a relationship because we genuinely want one, versus because we've been conditioned to believe we should always be looking?
That said, there's a distinction between choosing not to date because you genuinely don't want to and avoiding connection because you're afraid of it.
"The one thing I'd watch for: if not dating is really about fear, if you want connection but keep pulling away from people, that is worth talking through with someone," Green says.
The difference isn't necessarily what your dating life looks like from the outside, but how you feel about it. If you're content with your decision, great. If you're unhappy with it or feel stuck between wanting intimacy and avoiding it, that may be worth exploring. Either way, not dating doesn't automatically mean there's something you need to fix.
Misconception #5: Not Dating Means You're Not Having Sex
Now for the question everyone seems particularly interested in: If you're not dating, does that mean you're also not having sex? Not necessarily!
Despite often being lumped together, not dating and celibacy are two different things. Not dating generally means you're not actively pursuing romantic relationships, while celibacy typically refers to intentionally abstaining from sexual activity. And neither automatically requires the other.
"Not dating and celibacy are not the same thing," says Green. "Some people who aren't dating are celibate, some aren't, and some couples go through celibate stretches together. What matters is whether the choice feels like yours."
My friend, for example, hasn't actively dated in two years, but that doesn't mean she's spent those years abstaining from sex. She's had the occasional casual encounter, without feeling the need to turn it into something more. Her decision not to pursue a relationship hasn't required her to put her sex life on hold.
And she's hardly alone in that distinction. Someone who's taking a break from dating might still have casual sex, maintain a friends-with-benefits arrangement, or enjoy sexual pleasure on their own. Others might decide they don't want to engage in partnered sexual activity at all.
Evnin-Bingham emphasizes that stepping away from dating doesn't mean stepping away from pleasure. "This could be a great time to learn more about your body and what turns you on like erotic stories, listening to something sexy or practicing new ways to have solo sex," she says.
She also notes that someone who isn't dating might choose to have casual sex in a way that feels safe, playful, and aligned with their own desires. Of course, not everyone wants casual sex, and choosing not to have it doesn't automatically mean they're sexually frustrated or missing out.
Celibacy itself can mean different things to different people, too. Some define it as abstaining from partnered sex, while others include other forms of sexual activity. And people choose it for all sorts of reasons, including personal values, religious beliefs, emotional well-being, or simply not wanting sex at a particular point in their lives.
Importantly, celibacy isn't exclusive to single people. Someone in a committed relationship can also choose to abstain from sex, either individually or as part of a mutual decision with their partner.
It's also worth acknowledging that not dating can sometimes mean missing physical intimacy, even when you're perfectly happy with your decision.
"For many people, the loss of sex alone doesn't hit as hard as the loss of physical intimacy that comes with dating or being in a relationship," Digges notes. As a single woman myself, I can attest: Sometimes I find myself yearning for a good cuddle sesh more than sex.
But missing sex or physical affection doesn't mean you have to start dating again, just as wanting sex doesn't mean you have to pursue a relationship.
Your romantic choices and your sexual choices can be connected, but they don't have to be. You can be single and sexually active, partnered and celibate, or somewhere in between. None of those combinations requires a justification.
So, What Does Not Dating Actually Look Like?
The answer is different for everyone. For some, it's deleting the apps and enjoying a few months without romantic distractions. For others, it's an indefinite decision to prioritize friendships, personal goals, or simply the freedom to do whatever they want without factoring a potential partner into the equation.
It might involve sex. It might involve celibacy. It might be a temporary break or a long-term lifestyle choice. And yes, it might occasionally involve feeling lonely, missing physical intimacy, or wondering whether you should give dating another shot. None of those experiences makes the decision any less valid.
As Green puts it, what matters most is whether the choice feels like yours.
Because not dating doesn't mean your romantic life has failed, your sex life is over, or you're sitting around waiting for someone to come along. Sometimes, you're just not dating. And that's the whole explanation.
