⚽BOYS SOCCER - Division I Preliminaries
Portsmouth 1 (5), Moses Brown 1 (4)
Portsmouth started the Division I boys soccer playoffs with a mild upset Monday afternoon.
The Patriots prevailed on penalty kicks against Moses Brown, 1-1 (5-4), as the warm sunshine set quickly on Wasserman Field.
Shane Rogers completed his team's perfect trip through the shootout with the clincher into the lower right corner, sending Quakers keeper Haven Knapp the wrong way. Eoin Soler, Wyatt Woll, Tony Pyliotis and Will Ramos all converted for Portsmouth before Rogers stepped to the spot and kept his cool.
Gabe Chytka didn't need to make a save for the Patriots after Moses Brown smashed its opening attempt off the right post. Maddox Ribiero, Lane Aronian, Caleb Waring and Knapp extended the five-round proceedings to the limit by converting their kicks, with Knapp finding the right side off Chytka's hands.
The ninth-seeded Patriots (6-6-5) never trailed in this one, taking the lead late in the first half thanks to a pretty move down the right side. Pyliotis and Cael Mitchell combined to advance the ball and Woll came free in the middle for a simple finish that made it 1-0 into the break.
The eighth-seeded Quakers (5-7-4) found an equalizer early in the second half after Portsmouth thought it had cleared a free kick away from danger. Alex Pizzuti took charge on the left side and sent a perfect diagonal ball to Ribiero, who found space with the Patriots defense still attempting to get reorganized. Ribiero took it down on his chest and drilled one home with his left foot to make it 1-1.
Portsmouth played with 10 men over the final 12 minutes of regulation and all 10 minutes of extra time after one of its midfielders picked up a second yellow card and was sent off. The Patriots persevered long enough to earn a quarterfinal date with top seed La Salle, and recent history suggests an upset is a possibility. North Kingstown eliminated top seed Bishop Hendricken in the same round last year on its way to a surprise finals appearance, and the Rams dug deep to record a 3-2 win over Portsmouth in the lone meeting this season.

East Providence 3, Cumberland 0
The Townies started the season on fire and now they’re trying to end it the same way.
Early in the year East Providence looked like the best team in the state, but a brief reality check dropped it to sixth in the standings and forcing a preliminary round game. The sixth-seeded Townies showed up ready to play and with a dominant defensive effort and an offensive push that wouldn’t quit, put up a 3-0 win over the 11th-seeded Clippers to earn a spot in the Division I quarterfinals.
East Providence was a semifinalist last year and came into the season ready to be even better in 2026. The season started strong, but a four-game stretch where it went 1-1-2 dropped in the standings. The Townies bounced back with three straight wins, but last week’s scoreless draw with Cumberland didn’t help momentum.
As it turns out, the last draw was merely a bump in the road. East Providence came out confident and immediately went on the attack, getting on the board on a goal from Jaden Amaral 15 minutes into the half.
The Townies tried to add to it, but the Clippers pushed back. East Providence took a 1-0 lead into the break, thanks in part to its back line and the play of goalie Kayke De Campos.
A one-goal lead is never safe, but the Townies doubled it midway through the half after drawing a foul in the box. Nigel Fernandes converted the PK to make it 2-0 and sent a wave of energy through the sideline. Infused, East Providence kept chasing and Damian Monteiro found a goal to close out scoring for the night.
The defense was spectacular, with De Campos finishing with 16 saves in the win. East Providence will head to North Kingstown Thursday to play the Skippers, who it beat back on September 16.
Cumberland’s season ends with the loss.

⚽BOYS SOCCER - Division III Preliminary
Blackstone Valley Prep 3, PCD 0
Goals weren’t hard to come by when the Pride and Knights met in the regular season and that didn’t chance in the rematch in the playoffs.
Only difference was, Hayden Carreon was doing all the scoring.
Carreon was a force No. 7 Providence Country Day had no answer for, scoring two goals in each half to lead No. 10 Blackstone Valley Prep to a 4-1 win in Monday’s preliminary round game.
The teams met on October 14 at BVP’s small field, with PCD earning a 3-2 win. The loss was a part of a rough close of the season for the Pride, who lost four of its final five games and dropped to tenth in the D-III RPI standings.
In the playoffs, records don’t matter and BVP showed why. The Pride put immediate pressure on Providence Country Day and when its defense struggled to clear a ball, Carreon was there to gain possession and finish for the game’s first goal 10 minutes in.
For the majority of the half, BVP kept the ball on the offensive end. The Knights managed one strong attempt, but the Pride’s defense held strong and, after Carreon scored on a breakaway with 7:02 left, they took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
A two-goal lead is dangerous, so 1:55 into the second half, Carreon made it three. Providence Country Day managed a score from Gabriel Johnson to gain some late momentum, but Carreon wrapped a bow up on the result with his fourth goal later in the half.
Blackstone Valley Prep moves to the quarterfinal round of the Division III playoffs and will travel to play No. 2 Ponaganset Thursday at 6 p.m. Providence Country Day’s season ends with the loss.

⚽GIRLS SOCCER - Division I Preliminaries
It took something exceptional to beat Marielle Nassiff on this unseasonably warm Monday night, and Mt. Hope finally found it in the second half.
Sara Nencka scored a pretty goal in the 54th minute that wound up the winner, as the Huskies overcame a superb performance from the Moses Brown keeper to snatch a 1-0 win in this Division I girls soccer preliminary meeting at Roger Williams University.
Mt. Hope (7-6-4) found mostly frustration while looking to finish its chances in this one, but a lone strike was all it needed to book a quarterfinal place opposite Lincoln. Kendra Ascoli and Emma Goglia picked their way down the right wing and Goglia's layoff in front found Nencka to slam one home and snap a 0-0 tie.

The Huskies poured on the pressure from there but never found the insurance that would have all but assured their progress into the next round. Nassiff made 14 saves to keep the Quakers (6-10-1) within striking distance, and Cole Walker's drive into the side netting nearly gave the visitors the opener in the 48th minute. Moses Brown enjoyed precious few clear chances otherwise.
Nencka, Goglia and Ascoli were part of a class who played in a title match against Cumberland during their respective 2023 debuts. They could meet the Clippers again in a semifinal, but that would require a road upset against the third-seeded Lions. Mt. Hope and Lincoln will square off Thursday in a 5:30 p.m. start at Ferguson Field.

Chariho 0 (7), Prout 0 (6)
The Chargers outlasted the Crusaders in a dramatic penalty-kick shootout, 7-6, after the teams played to a 1-1 tie through regulation and overtime.
After a scoreless first half, Morgan Brucker gave Chariho the lead with about 15 minutes remaining. Lily McCann set up Brucker, who beat three defenders before slipping a shot past Prout goalkeeper Lauren Gill.
Prout answered in the closing minutes when Madelaine Voccio played the ball into the box for Olivia Micklick, who beat a defender and scored to force overtime.
Neither team scored during the 10-minute overtime, sending the game to penalty kicks. Both teams converted their first five attempts before the shootout stretched to nine rounds. Chariho's Olivia Riley converted in the ninth round, and Prout missed its final attempt to give Chariho the victory.
Chariho will play Cumberland in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Barrington 0 (4), Portsmouth 0 (3)
Ella Marin's penalty kick proved to be the winner as the Eagles edged the Patriots in Monday's preliminary round matchup.
After the match ended 0-0 in regulation, Barrington's Zoey Dyer saved one penalty kick attempt (five overall) and that was enough as Molly Thurston, Marissa Lema and Maddie Kiely also found the back of the net for the Eagles.
The win advances Barrington to the quarterfinal round, where they will meet top seed La Salle.

West Warwick 4, Blackstone Valley Prep 2
