Tension reportedly mounted in Abuja on Sunday after unidentified men allegedly attempted to vandalise decorations installed at the venue of the Nigeria Democratic Congress National Executive Committee meeting scheduled for Monday.
The incident occurred at the JD Event Centre, Abuja, where preparations were underway for the party’s NEC meeting.
According to organisers, the men allegedly attempted to pull down and damage decorations mounted for the gathering but were resisted and eventually forced to leave the venue.
The organisers further alleged that the men threatened to return and disrupt the meeting.
The identities of the suspected vandals and their motives were not immediately known. It was also unclear as of the time of filing this report whether the incident had been formally reported to the police.
Reacting to the development, Dr Prince, a member of the organising committee and an associate member of Northern Integrity Professionals, condemned the alleged attempt to disrupt the meeting.
“This is totally uncalled for. We are in a democratic setting, and everyone must be allowed to exercise their civic rights without intimidation,” he said.
Prince expressed concern over what he described as the declining respect for democratic practices, urging citizens and international observers to demand respect for constitutional rights and democratic institutions.
He warned that attempts to intimidate political participants or disrupt lawful political activities should not be tolerated in a democratic society.
The alleged incident comes as the NDC prepares to hold its NEC meeting in Abuja, with party leaders and delegates expected to attend.
