The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday directed the State government to formulate a scheme to curb stray cattle menace.
The direction was issued by a Division Bench of Justices P. Velmurugan and K.K. Ramakrishnan, which was hearing a public interest litigation petition filed in 2023 by S. Prakash of Madurai.
The petitioner sought a direction to the authorities concerned to take appropriate action to prevent cattle and other domestic animals from loitering, lying down on public roads and in other places, causing hindrance to the public in Madurai.
He also sought a direction to the authorities concerned to initiate appropriate action against the owners of the cattle and other domestic animals for letting the animals loiter and lay down on public roads.
Further, he sought a direction to the authorities to seize the cattle and other domestic animals and bring them to goshalas which were providing proper food, medical care and other necessary facilities.
