A freedom fighter in Milenge District, Bernard Chishimba, has urged pupils to remain focused on their education and take advantage of the Free Education Policy, saying they are privileged as compared to the challenges faced by learners during the colonial era.
Speaking in Milenge, Mr Chishimba pointed out that access to education was difficult during colonial rule, making the opportunities available to pupils today something they should value.
He said pupils should not take their education for granted, as the government has created opportunities for them to attend school without paying tuition fees.
Mr Chishimba urged pupils to avoid absenteeism during the current mopani worm(caterpillar harvest season), warning that some learners could be tempted to miss classes to go and collect caterpillars at the expense of their education.
“Pupils should not abandon their lessons to go and pick caterpillars. This is a season that comes and goes, but education is important for their future,” Mr Chishimba said.
He said the difficulties experienced by learners during the colonial era should serve as a reminder to pupils to appreciate the educational opportunities available to them today.
“During our time, it was difficult to go to school and learn. Today, children have the opportunity to learn under the Free Education Policy, and they should make good use of it,” he said.
Meanwhile, Milenge District Commissioner, Kayula Mulenga said education was essential to the development of the district and the country, as it equipped learners with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to national development.
Mr Mulenga said pupils should remain committed to their studies and make effective use of the learning opportunities provided by the government.
“Education is key to the future of our children and the development of our country. Pupils must take their studies seriously and ensure that they attend classes consistently,” Mr Mulenga said.
He urged parents and guardians to support their children’s education by encouraging regular school attendance and ensuring that seasonal activities such as caterpillar collection did not interfere with learning.
