The Kansas City Chiefs lost their first game of the 2026 season on Sunday, falling 20-3 to the Seattle Seahawks. To lead Seattle’s offense, Jaxon Smith-Njigba secured nine receptions totaling 150 yards plus a touchdown. Patrick Mahomes threw for only 165 yards and an interception as the Chiefs offense stalled completely. This result snaps the unbeaten start and forces a hard look at the roster.
Per Sky Sports, the Seahawks defense held Kenneth Walker III to just 36 yards on 14 carries despite him entering the game averaging a league-leading 133 yards per game. The Chiefs managed only 213 total yards and 50 rushing yards. This defensive collapse against a top-tier offense is the real story here, not just the final score. You cannot win games when your best players are shut down like this.
The Offensive Line Problem
The numbers show a clear breakdown in protection and execution. Mahomes faced constant pressure, leading to his first interception of the night on a pass intended for Jalen Royals. Ty Okada made that pick, and the Seahawks scored immediately after. The offense could not sustain drives even when they got close to the end zone. While the Chiefs failed to respond, Sam Darnold passed for 257 yards and a score for Seattle.
Coach Andy Reid did not hide the blame. He said, “Listen, all three phases we struggled, so we’ve got to do better, and that’s my responsibility.” He added, “So I take full responsibility for this. We’ve got to play better as a team.” This admission is rare and necessary. The coaching staff must fix the protection issues before the defense gets worn down further.
Next Steps for the Chiefs
The team faces a tough road trip next. They will play the Denver Broncos on Sunday, Nov. 1, at Empower Field at Mile High. The loss in Seattle leaves them at 5-1, but the margin for error is gone. Travis Kelce reached a milestone with four receptions to hit 1,104 career receptions, moving past Marvin Harrison and Cris Carter. He remains a bright spot, but one player cannot carry the whole unit.
Seattle coach Mike Macdonald noted the impact of the win. “I think this game reminds the guys what we’re capable of,” he said. He also stated, “I think our guys understand that there’s more levels to where we can go, and so I hope they feel the sense of urgency that we can get there because it is stuff that we can control.” The Chiefs must match that urgency immediately or watch their lead in the division slip away.
Why This Loss Hurts
Emanuel Wilson’s 21-yard scoring run with 3:47 remaining extended the Seahawks’ lead to 20-3. Jason Myers kicked field goals to extend the lead, and Harrison Butker missed two attempts for Kansas City, including a 58-yarder and a 45-yarder. Since the beginning of last season, Butker has missed 10 field goals. Special teams errors combined with offensive struggles create a losing formula that must change fast.
The Chiefs cannot rely on luck or last-second heroics anymore. The defense held them to 50 yards on the ground. The offense could not protect the quarterback. The special teams failed to convert field goals. This was a total team failure, and the data from Sunday proves it. The next game in Denver will show if they can fix these issues or if this was just a bad day.
