The Busiest International Routes From The US In 2026

Ranked 9th on Passport Index, the United States passport offers a healthy number of visa-free destinations for US citizens and, conversely, visa-free access for many foreign nationals. This drives strong demand for international air travel, though studies show a recent dip in 2026.

Several metrics can be used to measure the busiest commercial routes in global airspace today. Common differentiators include frequency, total passenger count, load factor, and even the number of airlines operating the city pair. Based solely on annual frequency, Cirium data shows nine routes originating in the US to an international destination, each with more than 3,000 frequencies per year. Canada appears several times on the list, and may be considered one of the most surprising destinations in the wake of the ongoing trade war.

Canada's Role In US International Flying

Amid a historic disruption of economic activity between the United States and Canada, complications have spread to the commercial, corporate, and military aviation sectors. Cities north of the border, notably Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), represent nearly half of the busiest international routes from the US. Most travelers would probably guess New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) - London Heathrow Airport(LHR) or Los Angeles International Airport(LAX) - Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) as the busiest international route from the United States. But frequency data tells a different story.

Four of the nine busiest international routes from the United States connect to Canadian airports, and together they account for 23,463 departures. In other words, more than half of all flights operating on the top-ranked international city pairs involve Canada rather than Europe, Latin America, or the Caribbean. This represents 50.7%, or a slight majority of the top nine reported city pairs.

Top International Routes from the US by Frequency Combined for over 46,000 Annual Flights

New York area airports to Toronto specifically account for two of these entries. American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines each serve Toronto from one or more of EWR, LGA, and JFK. Meanwhile, Porter Airlines and Air Canada connect the two cities on behalf of Canada. Air Canada recently cut JFK-YYZ in the wake of decreased transborder demand, rising fuel costs, and a push to consolidate operations at EWR and LGA. JFK currently lacks a meaningful presence of Star Alliancepartner United, providing more incentive to codeshare traffic available at EWR and, to a lesser extent, LGA. United has, however, indicated a desire to return to JFK.

New York to London Remains The Top Transatlantic Market

While Toronto benefits from frequency, New York JFK to London Heathrow remains one of the world's most commercially important aviation markets. The route recorded 7,338 departures during 2026, placing it just behind LaGuardia-Toronto despite operating flights that are nearly seven hours long.

Multiple carriers support this volume, including British Airways, American Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Delta, and JetBlue. United supplements this volume with its Heathrow service from nearby Newark, However, its figures are omitted from Cirium's account. Unlike domestic-style shuttle markets, JFK-Heathrow attracts premium business travelers, government traffic, financial-sector demand, and a significant number of connecting passengers flowing through both hubs.

This segment even creeps its way into the Top 10 Busiest International Routes by number of seats, sitting at number 10 per OAG and as the sole US route on that list. But even Heathrow's global profile could not prevent Canadian routes from filling so much of the frequency leaderboard, raising a deeper question about what airlines actually value: passenger volume or flight frequency?

The Significance Of Short Haul Markets

The distinction lies in aircraft utilization. Airlines can schedule several roundtrips per day on routes such as Toronto, Vancouver, or Mexico City using the same aircraft. A narrowbody operating between New York and Toronto may complete multiple rotations during a single day, something impossible on a transatlantic sector. High aircraft availability for shorter routes helps bolster the associated high frequencies.

This dynamic explains why Seattle-Vancouver generated 5,371 departures during 2026 despite involving metropolitan areas far smaller than London or Paris. Seattle to Vancouver is supported by Delta, Air Canada, and Alaska Airlines, and measures only 111 nautical miles (205 km). The route's short block time makes it an ideal aircraft-utilization tool. Instead of leaving a narrowbody idle between longer domestic flights, airlines can slot in a quick Seattle-Vancouver round trip, which helps explain why the market supports such high daily frequencies despite the relatively short distance between the two cities.

Similarly, Chicago-Toronto approached 6,000 annual departures as carriers maintained schedules designed around business travelers seeking maximum flexibility rather than maximum seat count. Envoy Air operates this route on behalf of American, and while there is sufficient demand to fill multiple American 737s daily, the type of business travel demand supports a higher frequency, lower seat count schedule, on up to five daily Embraer E170 or Bombardier CRJ-700.

A San Juan Route Beats New York To Paris

One particularly interesting route makes the list in 2026. Markets such as New York or Miami to San Juan may be inadvertently perceived as the most common route departing from the Puerto Rican capital. However, San Juan to Saint Barthélemy (SBH) takes the top spot as not only Puerto Rico's highest frequency pairing, but also ranks number five on Cirium's list, outpacing New York JFK to Paris.

While this route may not appear on every list, it still qualifies as a true entry; it originates in the US territory of Puerto Rico via San Juan and terminates in Saint Barthélemy, commonly known as St. Barts. This Caribbean destination is a popular tourist spot and part of France's overseas territories, also known as Outre-Mer. Other French Caribbean communities include Martinique and Guadeloupe, which are among a plethora of other overseas EU territories, like the Netherlands' Sint Maarten and Aruba.

San Juan to St. Barts has a total of 5,103 frequencies projected for 2026. Aeroroutes confirms that the current carriers deployed on the route are St. Barth Executive and Tradewind Aviation, both services aboard a Pilatus PC-12 aircraft. St. Barts' famously challenging airport limits operations to specialized regional aircraft, requiring airlines to compensate with frequency rather than capacity. The route likely wouldn't make a list based on total seats, as the PC-12 has a capacity of 10 passengers, per Pilatus.

What Do Mexico City & Bogotá Tell Us?

Beyond Canada and Europe, the rankings highlight the growing importance of Latin American connectivity. Houston to Mexico City recorded 3,643 departures during 2026, while Miami to Bogotá reached 3,231. Both routes serve metropolitan regions connected by trade, tourism, and extensive diaspora populations.

These markets differ from transatlantic routes because demand remains spread across multiple passenger segments. Business travelers share aircraft with leisure passengers, visiting friends and relatives (VFR) traffic, and connecting travelers moving throughout Latin America. As a result, airlines can sustain consistent year-round schedules without relying heavily on seasonal tourism peaks.

Both Houston to Mexico City and Miami to Bogotá connect four respective global airline hubs. However, each city pair is a flagship hub for a different alliance. Houston is Star Alliance oriented with anchor tenant United, whereas Mexico City is a significant SkyTeam base. Miami is oneworld member American's keystone Latin America gateway. However, Bogotá is catered to Avianca and its Star Alliance partners, as well as LATAM, which is currently unaffiliated with an alliance but has a joint venture with Delta. All of that to say, these are raw, high demand markets with limited, albeit some, codeshare connectivity.

Factors Impacting Rankings

If the rankings illustrate anything, frequency remains aviation's hidden metric. Routes such as JFK-Heathrow may attract headlines because of their international prominence, but frequency-based measurements often favor shorter sectors where airlines can repeatedly deploy the same aircraft throughout the day.

The current composition of the rankings also reflects fleet realities. Airlines across North America continue receiving Airbus A220s, Embraer E2 jets, and additional narrowbody aircraft that are particularly well suited for short international sectors to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Those aircraft create opportunities to add frequencies without requiring the larger investments associated with long-haul widebody routes.

Whether Toronto can maintain its top spot may ultimately depend less on demand than on how airlines choose to deploy future aircraft deliveries and on the ongoing political climate in North America. While LaGuardia-Toronto has long been one of the highest-frequency international routes from the US, the number of flights will be worth monitoring in the years to come. Other countries on this list, such as France, Mexico, and the United Kingdom, also rely on a healthy economic relationship with the US. Any hypothetical impacts on these relationships may play out similarly to how demand shifted with US-Canada traffic.
