It was a devastating gut punch when I sat down earlier this year to write about Paranormal Activity: Threshold only to discover it had been canceled and I'd missed the news. I'm not a huge fan of the movie series, though I do like the first few entries. Instead, my enthusiasm came from who was making the game: DarkStone Digital, creator of The Mortuary Assistant.
I find The Mortuary Assistant to be among the scariest games ever made, and I credit much of its effectiveness to its impeccable sound design, something the found-footage series relies on, too. DarkStone Digital felt like a perfect fit for a Paranormal Activity game, and I couldn't wait to play it myself. But when Paramount refused to give DarkStone more time to polish the game, the developers, understandably, backed out. I've mourned it ever since, but this past weekend, I got to enjoy a portion of the canceled project, and now so can you.
Out now on Steam as a free demo, Playable Archive is DarkStone's unfinished work, released as a "form of personal healing," studio owner Brian Clarke said in a press release. While Clarke never mentions Paranormal Activity by name, it's clear that Playable Archive is what's left of the now-canceled project.
"After working for so long on something I cared so much about, it felt wrong to leave it sitting on the shelf like some cursed item," Clarke explained. "Although the full-scale game this demo was built for will never see the light of day and many pieces of it had to be left on the cutting room floor, I feel like it’s important to honor what was built."
The 30- to 45-minute demo consists of first-person camcorder gameplay alongside a police investigation that occurs after all hell broke loose in a residence. By playing back tapes and solving occult puzzles, the investigator starts to piece together what went wrong.
As a horror-obsessed person, I came away with two prevailing thoughts after finishing the demo: First, I was genuinely shaken by it, adding Playable Archive to a very short list of games that have left me that way. It had me buzzing; I was so eager to tell other horror fans to run to Steam and play it for themselves that I wrote all this on my day off. It's Halloween, and you need to play this.
Secondly, I was so thankful it was released. Paranormal Activity: Threshold was one of my most anticipated games. Learning it wasn't going to happen was such a bummer. While it can't fully fill that hole in my heart, Playable Archive provides some sense of closure for what was likely going to be another banger from this indie team.
As its name is meant to evoke, Playable Archive feels somewhat like the inverse of P.T. and what Hideo Kojima experienced with Konami. The 2014 demo-like experience, P.T. (short for Playable Teaser), was once meant to be the enigmatic reveal of Kojima's Silent Hill project, curiously named Silent Hills. But when Konami and Kojima broke up, that full-length game never came to fruition.
Now, with DarkStone's project already dead for months, the team decided to release a demo for it anyway. It's a good idea and well-executed, since the demo is fantastic and suggests that whatever Clarke and company do next will be worth watching. It's obvious Paramount fumbled this situation by letting DarkStone Digital move on from the game.
It's Halloween, and you need to play this.
You can find The Mortuary Assistant, which we count as one of the best horror games, as well as DarkStone's other games, on the developer's Steam page. Personally, that's the silver lining of all this: I'm just now realizing I have more of the team's work to catch up on.
As for Paranormal Activity, there's no indication Paramount is seeking another studio to make a video game based on the series, though the next movie is due out in 2027 and is helmed by director Ian Tuason. For what it's worth, Tuason is also obsessed with audio design, as shown by his 2026 feature Undertone, so I expect he'll nail that movie, just as I was sure DarkStone's game would be special.
