Base, the layer-2 network incubated by Coinbase, is getting ready to produce a new block every 200 milliseconds on mainnet. That works out to five blocks per second, on a chain that currently produces one every two seconds.
The change arrives through an upgrade called Denim, which is targeted for mainnet activation in November 2026.
From two seconds to a fifth of one
Base currently produces 43,200 blocks per day at its two-second pace.
Under Denim, that figure jumps to 432,000 blocks daily. It is a tenfold increase in block output, achieved without adding a single extra hour to the day.
Denim has already gone live on Base Sepolia, the network’s testnet, where it was activated on October 21, 2026. The mainnet date of November 2026 remains a target rather than a locked-in launch.
These 200-millisecond blocks will be real, settled blocks on the chain. They are not promises about what a block will eventually contain.
Goodbye, Flashblocks
Since July 2025, Base has run Flashblocks, a mechanism that provided preconfirmations inside each two-second block window.
Preconfirmations are an early signal. They tell users and applications how a transaction is likely to land before the full block is finalized. Flashblocks made Base feel faster than its underlying block time suggested.
The catch is that a preconfirmation is still a preview. Applications that wanted snappy responsiveness had to build specifically against the Flashblocks feed, effectively maintaining a second track alongside standard block data.
Denim retires that arrangement. Instead of fast previews layered on top of slower blocks, the blocks themselves become fast.
There is a migration cost, however. Applications that were tailored to Flashblocks will need to move over to the new canonical block and RPC feeds. RPC, short for remote procedure call, is the standard way apps and services query a blockchain for data.
Part of a busy 2026 roadmap
According to Jesse Pollak, Base’s lead developer, Denim is one installment in a series of upgrades rolled out over the year, following the earlier Azul and Cobalt releases.
Pollak has framed Denim as focused on improving performance, security and user experience across the ecosystem.
Base is built on the OP Stack, the open-source framework for building layer-2 networks on top of Ethereum. The network has also pursued its performance push without launching a native token.
What this means for builders and the rest of us
Services that process every block, such as indexers and data platforms, are projected to see RPC call volume rise roughly tenfold.
That tracks the math. Ten times as many blocks means ten times as many block events to ingest, store and serve. The research also points to a substantial rise in newHeads events, the notifications that fire each time a new block is added to the chain.
For application developers, canonical blocks every 200 milliseconds mean faster, settled confirmations without depending on a separate preconfirmation layer.
